Because it really has a very remote bearing on future success. If it did Cleveland, Detroit and Cincy would have built better rosters decades ago and teams like Green Bay, New England and others wouldn’t be perennially in the playoffs.
The idea of picking a few spots earlier leading to future success is just not supported in any way in the real world.

Much like after the 2011 season, there will be no one happy we won a couple of extra games on route to not making the playoffs. Instead we will be looking at a team with no cap space picking in the middle of each round, losing multiple starters on an already bad defense and having no hope of getting significantly better. This no-man's land of perpetual mediocrity is the worst place you can be as a franchise. Speaking of the Lions, we have become the Matt Stafford era Detroit Lions and it just does not work.
