I'm absolutely not going to waste my time with someone who believes that Rick Spielman hasn't been running the Vikings front office since just after the 2006 draft.
Richard Spielman (born December 2, 1962) is an American football executive who is the general manager of the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). He was promoted to general manager in 2012 after spending 2006–2011 as the team's vice president of player personnel
So he basically was in a George Paton role before being promoted to GM in 2012.
Not sure how you can convince anybody he was in charge.
NFL-specific sources most often cited by national media, including Pro Football Reference and NFL.com, refer to Spielman's position from 2006-2011 as VP of Player Personnel and de facto General Manager.
And even the Spielman Wiki page you quoted says that he's been in charge of every draft after 2006, when he joined the franchise just after the draft took place:
- "To date, Spielman has overseen twelve drafts in Minnesota."
In fact, of the pieces that your Spielman Wiki page used as references, there's only one that relates the story of Spielman failing upward to the "GM position" when the Wilfs made no real moves but changed Rick's job title to give the appearance of bold action after a 3-13 season.
Here's the title of that article which, again, is your choice of reference, not mine:
- "Rick Spielman's Promotion to GM Will Be Huge Mistake for Minnesota Vikings"
And for anyone who points to Spielman lacking the power to hire and fire coaches as proof that he was not the de facto GM before 2012, well... by that standard, he still wasn't the GM after getting a shiny GM nameplate for his door. At least according to the AP, ESPN, and NFL.com, who said that...
- "The power to hire and fire head coaches will stay with the lead owners, the Wilf brothers.
So, to recap:
"VP" Spielman, 2007-2011: Ran the draft, signed FA's/made trades with Brzezinski, didn't have final say on coaches.
"GM" Spielman, 2012-present: Runs the draft, signs FA's/makes trades with Brzezinski, doesn't have final say on coaches.
