Opportunity costs.
The cap money has to come from somewhere, and overpaying means someone else can't be locked up in the future.
People said the same thing when Cousins was signed: "The Vikings paid market price," "We needed a quarterback and cost doesn't matter ..." Minnesota fans said the same thing about Parise, Suter, Mauer, and even Herschel Walker. Costs matter, and opportunity costs are often cruel and unsympathetic to the wants and future needs of any team in any sport that has fixed expenses. It is the dismal science of economics.
