This weekend's Week 1 slate does have a bunch of intriguing games and should hold-over any football fan until the NFL gets going the following weekend....
Matches I think are intriguing:
Thurs - 9/2
#4 Ohio State at Minnesota
Ohio State starts another new Fields/D Haskins/T Pryor/JT Barrett/C Jones in CJ Stroud. Minnesota has some talent and a veteran QB in Tanner Morgan. If Stroud can't get it going and Morgan makes some plays, the Gophers could hang around a lot longer than they should. I'd love to see an upset early in the college season.
Fri - 9/3
#10 North Carolina at Va Tech
It's all about North Carolina QB Sam Howell who is a potential Top 5 / Top 10 QB prospect in 2022. If he pulls off a big conference win on the road to start the season, of course the Heisman hype will start early.
Sat - 9/4
#19 Penn St at #12 Wisconsin
Both teams had disappointing 2020 seasons and someone will get off to a good start in 2021.
Fresno St at #11 Oregon
Fresno St has a "sleeper QB" to keep an eye on in Jake Haener and we'll find out if he's the real deal or not in Eugene.
#1 Alabama at #14 Miami
With Tua, Mac Jones and the never-ending stable of Rd 1 WR prospect gone, I'm not sure 'Bama will be outscoring opponents at the same clip they did the past 2 seasons. I do think their defense will be much-improved, and we may get a return to the more old-school Saban style of controlling the football and mistake-free/dominating defense that Saban hung his hat on for the majority of his current 'Bama run. I think Miami was propped-up a bit at #14 to make this game look a bit better than it actually will be - I don't expect the Canes to hang around at all and I don't expect Miami QB D'Eriq King (who's receive a little early Heisman buzz) to give Saban fits for too long.
#17 Indiana at #18 Iowa
Indiana was a bit of a "darling" team in 2020 and I actually enjoyed watching their games. I think this is interesting because if they can pull of a win at Iowa on opening weekend, they just might have a bit of a lasting impact on the BIG10.
#23 Louisiana at #21 Texas
Louisiana is ranked to start the season - the Ragin' Cajuns? They beat Iowa St to start the 2020 season so why not. The mastermind of the 'Bama offense in 2020, Steve Sarkisian, gets his shot at making Texas relevant again, but an opening day loss to the likes of Louisiana on opening weekend could derail that train before it even gets started. Interesting matchup.
#3 Clemson at #5 Georgia
The marquee matchup on opening weekend. No more Trevor Lawrence for Clemson and Georgia returns JT Daniels and a solid team on both sides of the LOS. In order for the SEC East to become relevant, Kirby Smart has to win games like this to start changing the narrative in the SEC. This could potentially be an early "knockout" game in the Playoff hunt.
#16 LSU at UCLA
UCLA crushed Hawai'i last weekend and have a strong OL and QB who's getting a bit of buzz. LSU had an "rebuilding" year in 2020 and so let's see how well they can compete in the SEC West as UCLA shouldn't be a cupcake team. My problem with UCLA is Chip Kelly - he's lost his luster after his time in Philly and even the college game has caught onto his 'ol Oregon act. Let's see if Kelly can evolve a bit and make it a good game.
Sun - 9/5
#9 Notre Dame at Florida St
I'm not sure why ND is ranked so high - they lost their QB and nearly the entire OL (which was real good). They should be good on defense (and might have the best S prospect in all of college football) but let's see how that #9 ranking holds up a bit early on in the season. FSU still isn't back, IMO, so even though this is on the road, a #9 team should be able to handily win here - let's see.
Mon - 9/6
Louisville at Ole Miss
Why are two unranked teams an "interesting" matchup? Well, I'm a Louisville fan so there's a reason. The other is Ole Miss QB Matt Corral, who had a solid 2020 season and with Lane Kiffin as HC, could be in for a solid 2021 season, too. He's getting some 2022 NFL Draft prospect buzz, too. A big win on the national stage on opening night could vault Corral's stock upwards. Also, after a disappointing 2020 season at Louisville, I'm hoping the Cardinals can bounce back and upset Lane Kiffin on opening night so I'll be watching.
