Backup QB Options

Watch Case maneuver in the pocket and tell me Cousins isn't a liability in that regard. It is like night and day and the biggest reason Case had success in 2017 while Cousins lead a bottom 11 offense the following season.

Count me in. I don't think Sloter was going to become a starter or even be a strong backup QB here, but I sure didn't understand why they didn't let him play with the 2nd team. If he didn't deserve it (meaning Zimmer was right), it would have been instantly apparent he was outclassed, right?? It started to look like there was fear he might do well, which is inexplicable.

Cam Newton just got cut by the Patriots. Maybe we can give him a call

Admittedly, his stats last year were ... shockingly bad, and that's with Belichick's help, so there is concern there. But he's definitely better than Mond and Browning. It kind of fits our "sign as many veterans as possible" theme this offseason, so, why not? If nothing else, it certainly makes the QB room more exciting! Newton is something else! 

Other teams could give him a better shot at starting some point this year and he would likely prefer them. Indy and Carolina for instance.

The thing you have to sorta consider w/ Cam is he may need an OC to tailor the offense around his abilities somewhat. While it's true he's not the running threat that he once was, he's not a traditional pocket passer, either. New England likes to be very flexible with their offense (ie, play to their opponents defensive weaknesses) and Josh McDaniels did what he could in New England and quite honestly, a 7-9 record in 2020 - considering they had a whole bunch of opt-outs - wasn't that bad.

Minnesota's run-heavy offense under Gary Kubiak wasn't too far off from what Cam was used to in Carolina, but given Zimmer's comments yesterday about perhaps needing a bit more "3-wide" with Irv Smith out for a bit, we may see a bit more passing from Kirk and less of relying on Cook early on.

The other question is: can Cam sign w/ another team knowing that he's not competing for the QB1 job? He signed w/ New England in 2020 and then again in 2021 to compete for the QB1 job and he lost it to Mac this year. It remains to be seen if Cam can accept a QB2 role behind an established starter like Cousins.

If Cam can accept a QB2 role with nothing more than vet minimum type of money, and Klint can tailor the playbook a bit if Cam has to be thrown in there, then it's not the worst idea in the world as Cam can at least sorta "game manage" an NFL offense better than Browning or Mond at this point. Fans just have to accept that if Cam has to start a game, you're gonna see a whole lotta handing off to Cook and balls in the dirt if Cam is asked to pass a bunch.

Denver and NO have backup options they probably prefer over Cam but Houston could be the team.  Even if they trade Watson to Miami and get Tua in return, they won't be happy just with him.  Heck, Miami might want Cam if they do that since Watson's season is in jeopardy.
