- Will Bashaud Breeland unseat Cameron Dantzler?
Answered or unanswered: Answered
From the minute Breeland was ready to practice in full (he was recovering from offseason shoulder surgery) he has been locked in with the first team.
Breeland is a long-time starter at outside corner so it was questionable wether he would sign anywhere where he wasn’t guaranteed a starting job but second-year corner Cam Dantzler did show flashes in his rookie year that suggested he could compete for the job. However, when Mike Zimmer talked about Dantzler, he gave no indication that there was a competition for CB2, instead the Vikings’ head coach talked about special teams.
“About Dantzler specifically, you know some of those guys got a chance to play last year, but adding some of these other guys I feel like the depth should really help us on special teams,” Zimmer said. “Because some of these guys that played last year probably won’t be playing first and second down, but they should be playing a lot on special teams.”
The best-case scenario for Dantzler appears to be finding a way to get himself into the rotation with Peterson and Breeland. Preseason games will be important for him to show that he’s making progress but there doesn’t seem to be any type of “battle” happening.

7. We still don’t know who the No. 2 corner is
Cameron Dantzler was the Vikings’ best cornerback a year ago, but now his path to a starting job isn’t guaranteed. Patrick Peterson is clearly the team’s top corner and will assume one of the starting spots. Mackensie Alexander will be the starter in the nickel.
But there’s a heated, ongoing competition between Dantzler and Bashaud Breeland to see who starts opposite Peterson. Both have rotated in with the starters, and while Breeland may be a bit more consistent, Dantzler has had the more noteworthy highs, including two interceptions of Cousins in a single practice.
But Zimmer wants to see more from Dantzler. He feels that Dantzler gets too down on himself after giving up big receptions and wants to see more steadiness from the second-year corner. He also wants Dantzler to prove that he can stay healthy.
