Interesting comparison of yearly PFF grades between Bosa, Garrett & Hunter:
Bosa PFF grades by year:
2016 - 86.6
2017 - 88.8
2018 - 75.8
2019 - 89.6
2020 - 90.2
5 yr avg: 86.2
Garrett PFF grades by year:
2017 - 80.0
2018 - 86.9
2019 - 86.5
2020 - 89.5
4 yr avg: 85.7
Hunter PFF grades by year:
2015 - 70.3
2016 - 77.3
2017 - 78.8
2018 - 77.8
2019 - 89.0
5 yr avg - 78.6
Both Bosa and Garrett grade nearly 10 pts higher than Hunter over their first 4/5 yrs in the league. I'm not 100% sure why that is, but I'm thinking that even though Hunter may have more raw stats than the other two, he may not relative to his pass-rush snaps. For instance, Hunter had 97 total pressures (Sacks, Hits, Hurries) in 2019, and he acquired that in 616 pass-rush attempts for a pressure rate of 15.7%. Compare that to Bosa, who in 2020 had just 61 pressures, but did so in just 350 pass-rush attempts for a 17.4% pressure rate. Bosa had less "raw" stats, but was more productive than Hunter on each of his pass-rush attempts.
No doubt that if Hunter can play to his 89.0 grade in 2019 in 2021 that he should get paid top DE money like Bosa and Garrett...but what happens if Hunter's 2021 grade is around his 5-yr avg at 78.6, while Bosa and Garrett continue to put up 85.0+ grades? You're basically in the same situation as O'Neill who doesn't grade-out as a top-level RT, but may demand to get paid like one.
O'Neill not the same, Hunter been recognized by his peers as a top guy and going to Pro Bowls. Speaking of PFF on OL is where they the most accurate IMO. O'Neill is seen as the 30th OT. If they have Hunter ranked 30th DE somebody needs fired.
No offense I know you love PFF they are not the written law for me though, some of their stuff I question. I do like how they do OL because it's the only place to get stats on the OL. The numbers and the eye test tell me Hunter is on par with any DE hands down, but that is just my opinion. It took him a bit longer to get going unlike Bosa and Garrett. That is why he was picked RD 3. They came in ready made. Hunter came in raw as sushi and needing coached up to realize his upside. A late bloomer who was still growing into his talent was Hunter at first.
