Josh Oliver will likely make us forget about Irv Smith Jr.
There were times he looked pretty good...but there was also dropping a wide open TD pass before the wheels had completely fallen off against Philly...there was also a crucial though seemingly little remembered drop against the Giants that could have extended a drive right before the Giants went 21 plays for a field goal (A 21 PLAY FG DRIVE!?).
That is Irv Smith's career, moments of tantalizing potential followed by the crushing reality that he is, despite a the underwear Olympic measurables,an undersized TE, who lacks athleticism, the ability to gain separation, at best unsteady hands, and is a below average in-line blocker who makes up for all of that by not providing anything on Special Teams.
Mundt and/or Ellefson are better blockers, and both are able to play Special Teams-Ellefson played 51% of the snaps before going on IR, Mundt played 19%. And, they both cost less than Smith's reported $1.75 million...without having the added expectation that they will "break out" any day now.
