Did Lynn personally profit from saving on rookie salaries? I'm not even sure they would have been higher than the salary they paid Walker...he was getting $1M/year at the time of the trade, and Emmit Smith only made $700K/yr on his 1990 rookie deal.
1990 - 1992 was a heyday for escalating rookie salaries:
In 1989, Troy Aikman was the first player selected in the NFL draft and got a six-year contract worth $8.6 million.
In 1990, Jeff George was the first player selected and got a six-year contract worth $12.5 million.
In 1991, Russell Maryland was the first player selected and got a five-year contract worth $7.9 million. Maryland is not a quarterback, but his $3 million signing bonus was more than Aikman's or George's.
In 1992, Steve Emtman was the first player selected and got a four-year contract worth $9 million. His signing bonus of $4.165 million was unprecedented regardless of position. Like Maryland, Emtman is a defensive tackle.
The Indianapolis Colts not only paid Emtman a fortune, they made linebacker Quentin Coryatt the second pick in the draft, and paid him $8.7 million for four years.
This year, a rookie salary cap is supposed to put the brakes on inflation. Under terms of the new labor settlement, teams are limited to an average of $2 million a year to sign all their rookies. In the future, it will be 3.5 percent of designated gross revenues.

I personally believe that the Walker trade was entirely about boosting the bottom line, which was tied to Lynn's compensation. Wasn't he still receiving some type of seat revenue from the Metrodome up until its demise?
