Super Wonnum had a decent rookie year IMO. He's not in Chris Doleman's league yet but he's young.....

Zimmer's track record for rookie DE's? That's hit and miss and you know it.
Michael Johnson, Carlos Dunlap and Hunter did well while Scott Crichton, Jaylon Holmes, BJ Dubose and Ade Aruna didn't. Some of those guys were late rounders too. Odenigbo wasn't a huge factor in his rookie year but he balled out when he got in the rotation. All in all it's 50/50 with most of the DEs coached under Zimmer. The two new guys, Patrick Jones II and Janarius Robinson are unknowns.

I can only hope Super Wonnum will up his game in his second season in the NFL.

I think any DE that gets burn this year consistently will look better than last year simply for the fact that Tomlinson and Pierce are miles ahead of anything we had in the middle last year. But still I think a guy of Hunters talent is not replaceable by anyone on this team and its not something I want to try and see play out. As a Viking fan I hope Wonnum or one of the rookies is a star this year, but that is asking a lot. We want to go into this season with all the talent we can on defense especially with all these 1 year contracts.

Thanks for the numbers.....keep in mind that in Hunter's rookie year he was on a DL with guys like Griffen/B-Rob and our D was good. Hunter went on to bigger and better things.

DJ didn't have that luxury and still did a good job as a rookie despite playing with Holmes and Odenigbo for most of the season. That and zoom OTAs and such. We can only hope DJ puts in the work like Hunter did and improves. We can sure use a DE that gets after the QB!!

If the Vikings didn't have the option to flat out cut him if he played poorly and not live up to their end of the contract, I wouldn't feel bad for Hunter at all. At the time he got paid on potential more than anything he had done on the field and it was a big investment by the team. They did right by him then.

Now? The Vikings will benefit from having him on a very cheap contract compared to the other great DEs in the NFL and flat out cut him if he underperforms. Hunter knows that, knows he needs to make bank now or he never will, and so he is doing the only thing he can do to get some leverage.

This is one of those situations where both sides are in the right, imo. Hunter should do everything he can to make as much money in his relatively short career as he can and the Vikings need to be more concerned with what is best for the team than what is best for Hunter.

He has no leverage. He is a player that is coming off of neck surgery who didn't play last year. Exactly what is his leverage? That he was good 2 years ago? His best bet, show up for camp, go through the drills and prove himself the first 5-6 games of the season. Then start b*tching about money. Then he might have some leverage.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you are not capable of great violence, you are not peaceful, you are harmless.

My entire post said they took a chance signing him early and before he was a proven thing. I do feel by the end of his contract he was out preforming it in comparison. I also said to a point, it would be a big gamble again if they paid top dollar now. You quoting just this part of it doesn't reflect my statement.

If being a Viking fan was easy ~ everyone would do it.

That's the main reason I don't want us to sign Hunter to a large extension. As good as these DEs are they don't have the same impact and production as a QB for that kind of money.

We paid him for the season after he initially tore up his knee in TC and then let him walk. We could have tolled his contract and kept him one more year.

At least that's how I remember it.

Hunter's injury last year and getting paid has nothing to do with it. Barr got paid. Thielen missed 6 games after getting paid. Injuries are part of the deal.

The Vikings set the precedent when they signed Thielen to his first extension and then two years later gave him a bump in pay.

It does not matter how many years were left.

They paid Hunter and he went out and rewarded them with two seasons of 14.5 sacks each.

He deserved a bump before training camp last year and anyone knew his disc was hurting.

He should hold out for more money. I support him 100%. All it takes is one snap to end anyone's career.

Since he is coming off the surgery and some folks feel like he is a great "unknown" all of a sudden, they could do a one year bump so that he would play and they both can see where he is at.

I would give him an 8M to 10M option bonus that I would spread over 5 years (adding two void years to his deal).

That way, he takes home 20M to 22M for this season and they do not have a long-term commitment.

It would only cost an extra 1.6M to 2M in cap space.

They could even include hefty incentives for making All-Pro (not the Pro Bowl), the team making the playoffs, etc.

Maybe they have offered this kind of one year increase and he is declining?

I think it is the safest way to get him back and for both sides to have a season to evaluate.

That's essentially what I remember. I think you're saying we treated him well by not tolling his contract, and I would agree. However.....I wonder if Bridgewater was angered by something the Vikings did, possibly how they threatened to toll, because he was so eager to take a pretty modest deal with the Jets. No way to know.

Hunter's leverage is that team management is afraid the 2021 season will go into the toilet without him, and at least some of them won't have jobs if they turn in another losing season. Is it truly dependent on Hunter? I'm not sure, but you could argue the defense, without him, was lousy long before Barr or Kendricks or anyone else was hurt.
