FACTS: Vikings did indeed try to trade up with multiple teams starting with #8. (video proves they called CAR with 14, 90, and 143, and quickly rejected)
APPARENT FACTS: They also made offer to the Giants at #11 (also rejected)
UNCONFIRMED RUMOR FROM "LEAGUE SOURCE": QB Justin Fields was our target.
The consensus among most is the target was either LT Rashawn Slater or Justin Fields, which makes 100% sense. If it was Justin Fields, and Spielman whiffed with his weak-ass trade offer, this would end up an all-time Vikings bungle. However... i'm not buying it, as I think Slater was always the target.
And the biggest piece of evidence is the OFFER ITSELF
Vikings offered a 3rd and a 4th and #14 for #8. That is weak sauce. If you believe you have your QB of the future, are you REALLY thinking you can offer that to get someone to drop out of the Top 10? Recent history shows that 1st round QB trades have to be loaded. and a 3rd and 4th to drop six spots isn't even close (which is why CAR slammed the phone down in disgust.) I would categorize that offer as a NON-COMMITTAL trade. A trade one would offer thinking, I'd like Rashawn Slater, but don't want to give up the farm for him as our #3 guy Darrisaw could be ours anyway. But we'll see if anyone bites, no harm, no foul. This is not the kind of trade you offer to transform your franchise.
Do I think if Justin Fields was available at #14 they would've taken him? Yeah I can buy that. i think they would've looked at it as an opportunity (same as when Aaron Rodgers fell to the Packers back in 2005) and justified the changing of course, but i do not believe the Vikings were trying to trade up for Justin Fields at any point whatsoever. It was always Rashawn. And if anyone has any new actual evidence that Fields is who they loved and wanted at #8, i'm all ears, but the trade offered only made sense if you wanted Rashawn Slater, not a QB. Cronin's report only generalizes, there is no explicit statement or quote indicating the Vikings wanted Fields at #8 or #11.
VERDICT: NOT GUILTY
