Yeah he does, we already have questions on the DL as far as pass rush. I like the young DEs but it takes a while for DEs to become elite usually. It even took Hunter a few years.
Zim and maybe Rick don't have that kind of time we have to compete now or they might get fired. The Bosa boys get hurt a lot. Carl Lawson too and Lawson never had more than 8 sacks but got well paid. Hunter underpaid for sure.
Hunter makes it easier for the other DE also, because he frees them up for way less attention and more one on ones. Hunter has a direct affect on the whole DL. Plus without him what top notch player guys like Wonnum, Jones, Robinson have to look up to and follow to greatness?
If we trying to have a real playoff chance him playing is critical. Jobs likely on the line seems like leverage to me.
Putting aside that he didn't play last year, and with all due respect to Danielle Hunter, he isn't the best DE in the league when healthy...if he doesn't show up Day 1 of Training Camp? He does not accrue a season towards free agency. They can fine him $40,000 for every day he doesn't show up. But, people say, he can show up and pretend he has a twisted ankle and can't practice or play. Do you think that doesn't get around? That players are front office people don't talk to each other?
So, we have a player with coming off a missed season, with a injury to his neck, who won't practice or play because a team is naturally (and rightfully, in my opinion) reticent to give him a new deal before he proves himself healthy? They aren't asking him to play for a food and gas money, the Vikings owe him $12.125 million for 2021, and they paid him his salary for exactly zero snaps last year. And, any team trading for him needs to give him a new deal AND be at peace with the fact that the first time he feels disrespected, real or imagined-he'll twist his other ankle and miss 6 weeks? What does that player fetch in a trade? A mid-round pick, a conditional third or fourth? The Vikings can't trade him for that.
They'd rather have him sit and fine him until he realizes his best way to get what he wants his to play his ass off. Then, the Vikings can pay him what he earns or trade him to someone who will. Or, he could just do that from Day 1 and get what he feels he earned, if his play and health justify it. So, why would he go through all the hassle and rigmarole?
Anyway, the ball is in the Vikings court and Danielle Hunter has to be smart enough to realize that.
Could we let him sit yeah, but our history says we either will pay him or trade him. Being on the hot seat doesn't lean to trade him. If it was a new coach and GM maybe, but not in a win now mode. We will pay him. I can guarantee if we don't somebody else would pay him top 3 to 5 money. Danchat put me down for another prediction we will pay Hunter before week 1.
They know the situation, if we was going to not pay him, he would have been traded before the draft that is how we do business in the past.
