I won't jump deeply into the discussion of Patterson's reputation because I have questioned it in the past. He has results that are mixed, but like Zimmer, there are devoted fans that speak of him with awe.

But he has an opportunity, with guys currently on the roster, to impress the hell out of me. Wonnum, Jones, Robinson - even Weatherly - have great athletic talent. On paper, Janarius Robinson is the one I would love to see reach his potential.

And Twymann...I almost hate to say, once more, "potentially the penetrating 3T we've been hoping to get", but yeah, wouldn't that be great? I know Pierce and Tomlinson are our interior DL for 2021, but I'm not so sure Pierce will be here very long. Next year he will be 30, his cap hit doubles (to $10.5M), but there is an option to cut him with only $4M dead cap. Maybe he will be such a stud that we will want him here the rest of his career, but he's also had conditioning issues, so..we'll see. I think Tomlinson will be a much better player to have here and the team will be talking about an extension for him this time next year. We could have an opening for a good DT to pair with him; sure would be awesome if Patterson can turn Twymann (or Lynch or Watts) into that player.

I do agree Pierce may not be here long. Tomlinson will be the stud.. But that is why you keep bringing in talent. If Willikes for instance gets cut is that a bad thing? What about if Jones becomes a star or Robinson? Or Wonnum? All can't turn out with Hunter they all play same position.

So no matter what some guys can't turn out due to the limitations on snaps. So a list of misses doesn't matter as much as the bottom line Dline play results. Due to natural course only so many can be hits. New guys constantly come in every year, that the nature of the business. It comes down to results and more times then not the Dline be good. So he has done his job. The goal is to keep and play the best guys out of the collection of guys you brought in and results should be how you view a coach.

I thought about this a bit, and then looked at the young DEs we have and started wondering...did Jones rush from a DT spot much in college? Jones, OTOH, is just a bit over 6'4" and has arms under 33". Actually he is built a lot like Ifeadi Odenigbo, who the Vikings really wanted to turn into a DT (or at least a part-time interior rusher). I just wonder if they see Jones the same way.

Just a question. Why do you think pierce could be here short term? I saw enough of him in Baltimore that I think he should make a good run stuffing nose tackle. Tomlinson will be playing the 3 tech. Imo he will more than likely be the one who could struggle this year as he is out of his natural position.

You underrating Tomlinson. I saw him on the Giants since Cowboys games are on every week in Dallas my city. NFC EAST games stay on the tube. Tomlinson actually has played up and down the DL in NY. He might not get a ton of sacks but his 3.5 is close to the 4 Sheldon Richardson gave us and Sharriff, but he is better against the run than those 2.

Sacks is not a DT main job, (Aaron Donald's don't grow on trees )and sacks can be overrated at times. Sometimes you get sacks cleaning up a play that someone else disrupted and created for you. Tomlinson gets a solid number of pressures. Which allows others to clean up with sacks. He is good against the run like Pierce but better at rushing the passer. Pierce deal is structured to where we can get out of it after this year when it balloons. DT contract we can't for 2 years. Pierce is cool but DT is more versatile. I am excited about Pierce too, but DT will be better IMO.

I get it man about his versatility opposed to pierce but I didn’t realize piece deal ballooned after this year. Then that makes sense. And yeah I get the cleanup on sacks reference I see those a lot. Guys are in right place at right time because someone else forced the pocket and qb to that spot.
