Since 2000, 12 guards have been selected within 5 picks of where Davis was selected.
9 started at least 1 season, 8 were multiple year starters. Only 4 were first year starters, and of those 4 only 1 ended up actually being a solid starter in Miller.
Incognito was by far the best of that 12 selected within 5 spots of where Davis was, followed by Jeremy Zuttah, Gabe Jackson, Miller and then Dockery. The rest would likely be considered below average guards.
Well, the Vikings do have experience in taking a 3rd round guard from Ohio State... that'd be Elflein. Oddly enough, he was best in his rookie year, but even then was still a below average center (you could debate what his true position is, but he started at both guard and center in college). I am hoping Davis ends up like Gabe Jackson, but I wouldn't be surprised if he struggles in year 1. The PFF study on improvement/development indicated that offensive linemen usually take their biggest step forward in Year 3, so more than likely we'll have to be patient.
At this point every position should be up for grabs no matter what.
While I agree with that sentiment, the backup OL options aren't good enough to create any real competition. Wyatt Davis is likely winning the RG job because Cole and Dozier suck. Rashod Hill isn't beating out Darrisaw.
You want to talk about OL depth, check out the Chiefs' OL after the draft... they have so many options I have no idea what they're going to do.
