Even if Mond gets into a game, which is unlikely outside of a blowout or a meaningless week 18 game, he will likely be as bad or worse than cheaper options that are currently available at backup QB. A rookie taking very few reps with the first team will not likely be as good as a vet backup in spot duty and vet backups do not cost high 3rd round picks.
That pick was about the future, and it was a significant investment in that future.
Even replacing Reiff with Darrisaw was about the future, with Darrisaw not likely to be as good as Reiff would have been.
These are forward thinking moves, and very different than we are used to from this GM.
I believe it was you who responded to a post I made yesterday about standing pat with their picks, not trading up that pretty much gave every third round pick a 20% of becoming a solid pro.
What is it that will make Mond a better third round QB than:
Davis Webb
Garrett Grayson
Ryan Mallet
Sean Mannion
Kevin O'Connell
Charlie Frye
Andrew Walter
Giovanni Carmazzi
David Greene
Dave Ragone
Brock Huard
Jonathan Quinn
Charlie Whitehurst
Brodie Croyle
Cody Kessler
Fact is, you are lucky if that guy develops into a semi-competent backup like:
Mike Glennon
Colt McCoy
And luckier still if you get:
Nick Foles
Jacoby Brisset
Matt Schaub
And 1 team in 25 years (the timeframe I have examined here) gets:
Russell Wilson.
All those guys, various levels of talent, various tools, big schools and small. WAY more flameouts then stars. I think Mond has more Jacoby Brissett in him than Charlie Frye in him. But he probably also has more Davis Webb in him than Russell Wilson.
A team wagering their future on a third round QB is not making a bet with the odds in their favor.
As someone else pointed out in response to my post, not all 3rd round picks are created equal. The 66th pick is more likely to hit on a player than the 90th.
QBs taken within 5 spots of the 66th pick not including this draft since 1990:
Jimmy G
T Jack
Charlie Frye
Andrew Walter
Giovani Carmazi
Charlie Batch
Kordell Stewart
Peter Tom Willis
Neil O'Donnell
Every one of those guys started at least one season save Carmazzi who was so bad he was cut before the season started and Peter Willis. I am not sure about the rest of those guys, but Stewart, Jackson, Batch, O'Donnel and Jimmy G were drafted with the hope they would be their team's QBOTF. Even of the 3 drafted in that slot this year, most would agree Mills and Trask are going to be groomed to take over.
Not Mond though?
