I know many fans are excited for the "value" received in the Darrisaw pick; I just want to point out perhaps some of the "negatives" so we're all aware.
- If Darrisaw really was considered OT3 in this class behind Sewell/Slater, and given the need for OT's in the NFL considering the cost on the open market, why did he drop all the way down to #23, past the Raiders who took Leatherwood instead and past Indy who surely will take an OT at some point to replace Costanzo?
- Charlie Campbell posted this in his Round 1 grades (link): "He's long and athletic, which is exactly what Minnesota looks for from its offensive linemen. However, several teams told us that there's "something missing with Darrisaw." Some teams think he lacks toughness, which would worry me."
- I already posted this on Pg 1 of this thread, but for anyone who missed it, this is from Tomasson's article after the Darrisaw pick and Spielman presser that followed (link); "Spielman said Darrisaw had sports hernia surgery in January but that all the medical reports were good, the final ones coming in two hours before the draft."
- These Scout takes were taken from Bob McGinn's Draft Guide on The Athletic (link), “I saw a guy who played tough and with good angles, but I didn’t see him dominate in the run game,” another scout said. “You put him against a guy like Kenny Clark in Green Bay, I don’t think he can block (him). I really don’t. I have him in the third round.” A third scout said Darrisaw was “up there sort of by default. He’s definitely overrated.” His style of play was described as “so casual” by a fourth scout. Said a fifth: “Super light on his feet. Just effortless with everything he does. That kind of plays into his negatives a little bit. It’s always been easy for him. Does this guy have the drive, the competitiveness? Part of it is it’s easy for him. Part of it is get your ass moving. He has every bit as much talent as the top guys. It’s if you can marry yourself to the kid.”
- From Tony Pauline's Round 1 analysis (link), "The Vikings get the player at pick No. 23 they hoped they would get at No. 14. Darrisaw fell due to medicals and poor interviews, but he’s an incredibly talented blocker and projects to multiple positions on the offensive line."
The concern for me is that it's obvious that Darrisaw has the physical attributes (size and athleticism that show up on tape) to be the fit at LT, but the worry seems to be that he needs a bit of technical refinement (sloppy feet, casual, etc.) and "drive", and concern I have is that given the lack of OL development from our OL coaching, I'm wondering if Darrisaw will reach his potential w/ the Vikes? While the core of the OL is relatively young (O'Neill, Bradbury, Ezra), the pass-blocking just has not developed at all - they were 27th in the league in 2018 (O'Neill's rookie year), 27th again in 2019 and worsened to 29th in the league in 2020 (per this article - link).
While Darrisaw could be the right fit, do the Vikings have the right coaching? There isn't any more excuses for Dennison at this point and quite honestly, after Aaron Kromer was left go from the Rams coaching staff, the Vikings really should have given him a call.
As for Darrisaw. He was one of the BPAs at pick 14 at a position we needed. Only time will tell I suppose, but that's the guy I wanted and we got 2 3rd rounders as well. No complaints. Hopefully Rick goes out and fills OG and QB tonight.
