Is Jimmy G better than KC?

Exactly they won in spite of Jimmy. Now Cousins isn't elite but he is pretty darn good with pieces around him. Protect Kirk give him weapons he can sling it. People just hate him, but to say Kirk can't win with the right pieces around him is unfair. There are times Kirk gets hot as lava and has top of the line streaks. Now he can get cold. But at his best he clearly better than Jimmy IMO.

I know Jimmy G didn't need to do a lot in the playoffs to get to the SB, but I don't think SF wins 13 games and gets the #1 or even #2 seed with Cousins at the helm. Pure speculation either way.

Jimmy's contract was front-loaded, so now on the back-end of the deal, it's easier to get out of with practically zero guaranteed money, and he's very tradable. I'm not sure why they're refusing to trade him at the moment, though.

Yes, I'm very aware of the bust rate of 1st round QBs. But at least the 49ers have the ability to go out and roll the dice on one now. I'd prefer that over being forced to pay Cousins $76M the next two years on the cap, and the GM/HC are on the hot seat so there's no way they're going to draft a rookie QB high, so we'll have to wait until 2023 or something. Winning the SB is hard, but under the Vikings' current formula it's insanely hard. Under the 49ers' formula, I like their chances of going deep again soon if they hit on the QB pick.


Shanahan likes Kirk so much that he was willing to gush about him at a press conference where he wasn't allowed to talk about other teams' players... I have no doubts he would do just fine in Kyle's system. The other two questions you posted are up for debate.

We all agree Cousins is not elite, but he is better than Jimmy G. Jimmy has been healthy one season, and he had a dominant defense and a dominant running game and a great play-caller for a Coach. He was in position to win a Super Bowl, and he did not. Going forward, Cousins gives good teams a better chance to win than Garoppolo because he is durable and he has improved. How much better would Cousins be on a team with an offensive line that is good in pass protection? The Viking offense would likely be a top 5 offense - good enough to win a Super Bowl. So if the Vikings are ever going to compete for a Super Bowl, the O-line cannot get dominated like it has in the past three years by top defenses.

We also know a top defense is important because teams with dominant defenses and capable QBS do win Super Bowls. The Bucs proved it again. Even great QBs, winners like Mahomes, need decent protection to win. To beat QBs like Mahomes, you need a dominant pass rush. So the Vikings need a healthy Hunter and at least one other good to great pass rusher to really compete. Is there one on the roster now that can develop, or do they need to find their next Hunter in the draft? Because they need both a better pass rush and better pass protection, their first round draft pick will be very interesting to see.
