Frankly, that's enough evidence alone for me to be convinced he's going O-Line in the 1st. And likely again in the 3rd. And likely a signing at some point ala Fisher or Schwart or maybe the OBJ trade.
Thanks for all the insight. But I think this is the key point: will he really draft an OL and - key part - count on immediate contribution?? Because, if you are right and some jobs are in danger, I can't understand why he has taken no action for the OL. In years past, he has signed players like Alex Boone and Andre Smith and Reiff and Kline in a (bad!!) attempt to aid the line, but this year? Dozier + Cole - Reiff < 0. Sure, there are still options, but every day they get slimmer, so I see a few possibilities as to why so little action:
- We are wrong about job danger for anyone at Winter Park; Wilfs are content with their income stream.
- Zimmer may be in danger, but Spielman is not - they are not "joined". So Spielman is giving Zimmer what he wants with the understanding that if he fails, especially if the defense does not recover, he can find a new HC.
- Spielman actually believes Klint and Dennison can make the offense work without spending big money - that they will get special performance from the "right kind" of players, like Cole.
- He has been trying to sign UFA linemen, and they all laugh in his face and say, "Minnesota is where offensive linemen go to die!!"
- He is, as you suggest, going to draft offensive linemen in the first, the third, and maybe twice in the third, even if he has to lock Zimmer in a basement.
The thing with option 5 is, isn't Spielman likely thinking, "Man, I got Bradbury, considered a can't-miss prospect and supposedly ready to play from day 1, and it looks like my coaches messed him up too" ?? If so, he cannot count on getting an immediate fix with draft choices. No way.
