Justin via email: Do you have an estimate of how many head coaches are like Zimmer and call their own offensive or defensive plays? I don’t see Zimmer ever giving it up but do you think that takes away from him being more involved in the other aspects of the game?
I don’t have an exact number for you but it seems like it’s a pretty high number. These guys work their entire lives to have a shot at being an NFL head coach, so it’s really hard to hand over duties to someone else. Zimmer has said before that he doesn’t want to be second guessing his DC’s calls if something goes wrong and he’d rather have it on his own shoulders. That explanation makes sense to me. Now, I do think if you’re going to call plays, decisions on challenges and clock management should be up to another coach.

@oldnorse How much different is Zimmer this year? His press conferences seem more relaxed/honest and less forced/calculated. Is it just me? Why?
Maybe a little. There’s always been a big difference between camp/preseason and the regular season. The season is so crazy stressful for coaches that you can end up with some terse press conferences, especially if things are on a downturn. So we’ll see how they go as the season goes along. Overall I’ve always found him to be insightful. It’s the sharp comment every so often that gets shared on Twitter or whatever but on a day-to-day basis, it’s usually at a different level of depth than a lot of coaches. I’ve always learned a lot.

@vikings_cg Who has consistently been the nicest Vikings player or coach to you/media?
Most players and coaches are pleasant to deal with. What I enjoy the most about covering a player is when they’re willing to teach something. Terence Newman was unbelievably helpful in my first two years. He would spend 10 minutes on a Friday breaking something down if I asked. Tom Johnson, Xavier Rhodes, Captain Munnerlyn and Adam Thielen were/are always available and willing to deep-dive on football. Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray are smart guys who are really open about things. That’s appreciated. I got along well with Stefon Diggs. He was insightful in a one-on-one setting. Some of you think the folks who cover the team have some problem with Kirk Cousins — that’s totally wrong. We all get along with him quite well. I’ve never met a reporter who didn’t. He’s usually thoughtful with his answers and affable. He’s been really helpful on some cool stories (like the one about watching his first game back on tape last year). Michael Pierce is probably the most earnestly friendly person I’ve ever covered. There’s a lot more. The sheer number of smart players in football makes it pretty easy to get along.

@adplusverb How is the Herndon trade worth a 4th round pick if it's only a 1 year deal? Do they anticipate getting a compensatory pick if it doesn't work out? 4th round picks rarely turn out but at least you possibly get a few years out of them as backups, right?
It’s probably not worth a fourth rounder. I wouldn’t expect that they get much back as a compensatory pick and I guess there must have been competition for his services to jack up the price because usually a guy who loses a job to three other tight ends ends up getting released. But this team isn’t in a spot where they can let a key position go untouched in the name of getting the best price. They run two tight ends a lot, so somebody had to fill it in. It’s only slightly on the side of being inefficient but if you’re grading every move for efficiency, they’ve had more on the inefficient side in recent years.

scott_Roberts25 Not to get too far ahead but if Hunter does anything near his average level of performance is there any chance he’s not getting TJ Watt/Joey Bosa money? He wouldn’t go into 2022 without another re-negotiation would he? Can the Vikings even do that type of deal?
Yeah if he plays at top level and has 15 sacks and 80 pressures, he’s getting a new contract worth over $100 million. The Vikings can do a deal like that if… you know what I’m going to say here, right? Let’s just say that Ben Roethlisberger took less so the Steelers could get the TJ Watt deal done.
