The Zimmers and Patterson were all hired together in 2014, and both Adam and Andre were promoted in 2020, so there really isn't a "new guy" here. Though I do see Patterson was the Vikings' D-line coach back in 1998 and 1999...
Shhhh! Don't ruin the Nepotism narrative! See, it doesn't matter that Klint Kubiak worked for the Vikings once BEFORE his father was hired, and he has also coached at Texas A&M and Kansas. Nope, it only matters now that he is succeeding his father. It certainly doesn't matter that Adam Zimmer coached five seasons in New Orleans and Kansas City before ever joining his father's staff and had been a defensive assistant in Minnesota for 6 years before getting a token promotion to CO-Defensive Coordinator.
No, that ruins the narrative that they only get jobs because they are coaches kids. Just like guys like Kyle Shanahan, Wade Phillips, Mike Nolan, Brian Schottenheimer, the Ryan twins, Jim Mora Jr. and any other number of guys of various success levels who also followed their father's footsteps.
The name MAY have gotten these guys an interview back when they were trying to open the door and get into the business, but Zimmer(15 seasons) and Kubiak (9) have plenty of a resume to work with now-and had they gotten DC and OC jobs anywhere else, no one would care.
From Wall Street to locker rooms, that is almost always the excuse for nepotism.
How many coaches were not given the chance so they could be? What about the Joe Smiths who have worked hard to be a coach all these years but can't get a foot in the door because they doesn't have the family connections? If Adam Zimmer is good enough to be a DC, then he should have been hired by another team needing a DC. The same for Klint Kubiak on offense.
Zimmer and Patterson moved up, and now the defense stinks. Who is to blame? Well, I partially blame Mike Zimmer because having co-anything coaches usually creates more problems than it resolves, but Mike wanted his son to get the title.
Mike Zimmer likes to hire coaches he has worked with and has personal connections to regardless if they have failed on other teams. He uses the old boy network like a personal coaches waiver wire. Gary Kubiak would only come to Minnesota if Dennison and Klint Kubiak were hired with him, and he set up Klint as his heir apparent after just one season. It is crony football capitalism at its finest. Klint Kubiak may or may not do well as OC, but the road for him getting the position is borderline unethical.
