A guard at 14 would piss me off almost as much as a center at 18.
I do tend to agree with you; Vera-Tucker is a "safe" pick because he can plug-n-play on our OL from Day 1 because of how poor our current roster depth is. But the question is: can you still get an OL prospect on Day 2 that might not be as "polished" as Vera-Tucker, but who would likewise be an upgrade to our current OL depth? I think it's possible, if the Vikings weren't so pigeon-holed into only looking at wide-zone prospects only....
So I'm wondering if we can still land the "safe pick" in Vera-Tucker if we're able to trade-down about 4-5 spots with either Miami or Washington and pick up another Day 2 pick to use to get back into Round 2. It's possible - the only team I see between #14 and #19 that may very well take Vera-Tucker is the Raiders, who gutted their OL this offseason. I do tend to think they go DL in the 1st, but Mayock and Gruden are such a wild card they can do anything.
I'd personally feel slightly better if we're able to get a bit more "value" out of that Rd 1 IOL pick of Vera-Tucker than to just sit at #14 and take the "safe play", because it may mean we're able to get another Top 100 pick who could provide value in Year 1.
There is a spot in the 1st where taking a guard makes sense, just not at 14. 18 might be too high too, but at least we get another pick trading down.
