I read a report earlier today there are already nfl clubs who are foaming at the mouth for a potential trade for Watson. They mentioned Steelers, colts (doubt it would happen in same division), patriots, jets, bears, raiders and a couple others. This is what I meant earlier when it isn’t going to be cheap for anyone to trade for him as the Texans would get a lot in return.
Yes,it's not going to be cheap, but franchise QBs aren't cheap and if you don't have one your not consistently winning in the NFL.
It's only a phone call to ask what Houston want,if you don't have a horse in the race you can't win.
I love the idea of acquiring Watson, and it is doable if you keep an open mind.
A couple things I will say about the way you laid out the trade offer.
1) Dalvin Cook can't be part of it as it would incur $12.4M dead money and -$7.2M hit to the salary cap. So that won't work.
2) Cousins would have to be traded, perhaps offering a straight swap Watson for Cousins and a couple draft picks.
The numbers workout ok doing this,Cousins cap hit for 2021 is $31M and 2022 $45M.By trading him,the 2021 dead money is $20M with $11M cap space gained.2022 dead money would be $10M with $35M cap space gained.
Watson has a 2021 cap hit of $16M and 2022 $40.4M. AS for the rest of his deal,it's very reasonable but could be restructured if the Vikings chose to.
I also think having Watson and Cook together makes the offense more dynamic than it is now.I get some people want to fix the OL and DL etc. but those can be upgraded in FA and draft, whereas finding a franchise QB in FA isn't happening and drafting one seems beyond the capabilities of the current regime.
Plus this roster isn't getting fixed in 2021 with so many holes,so why not try and upgrade the most important position on the roster and be set for the next 10 years, then build around it.
That means in 2021 his salary is 10.5 million, 2022 it is 35 million, 2023 37 million, 2023 32 million and in 2024 32 million. Which is still a lot but essentially a discount of about 5 million a year over what an elite QB on second contract costs. A little more than that actually, because his 2021 salary is so low.
