ultimately its Mike Zimmer's judgement that i have concluded is why he must go. He made some key decisions that would decide his fate in the past few years and none of them panned out. and yes Spielman is bound here too, but Zimmer seems to have the ultimate decision making power so i blame him more.
--Yannick Ngakwe debacle. We make this killer trade for him, he's relatively cheap, he's playing well and getting better each week, we lose a few games and we trade him??? Okay, i get it we're tanking. seems premature but i'm game since i want a new QB. Oh, wait now we're trying to win again. so why did we trade him away??? Considering the close losses we suffered, Ngakwe would've made a difference. Horrible and nonsensical decision making...
--replenishing our entire CB unit with late round rookies in 2020. almost every loss came because of our CBs giving up crucial (and non crucial) plays in every game. I agreed with dumping Waynes and Rhodes, but to not have suitable replacements was ridiculous and cost us wins. literally.
--extending Kirk Cousins in the 2020 offseason for 1 great quarter in New Orleans. It took Kirk the end of his 2nd season to finally do something worthy of being the highest paid QB in the NFL, and with one year remaining, this would force Kirk to keep that level of play up, and prove he's for real, as his demand would be minimal. Instead Zimmer and the Vikings were so overjoyed by Kirk with 2 great passes out of 500 that they gave him long-term security and the highest paid QB of all time. and how did Kirk reward us with that honor? By playing like garbage, which is how he usually plays. Dumb move Zimmer...
[WARNING: the following statements concern Teddy Bridgwater. Yes he's had an up and down year in Carolina, but keep in mind it's his first year there in an abbreviated Covid offseason on a team whose defense gives up chunk yard plays on the regular, with an offensive line similar to the Vikings. How he would've done had he never left MN is a genuine "what if?" the seamlessness of his return (1-2 years between starts instead of 4-5), his comfort level with coaching staff, teammates, and facilities, and the factor of being embraced as the franchise and the history of already leading this team to heroic wins and an historic playoff winning drive over the SB champion Seahawks erased by Blair Walsh. I acknowledge Teddy isn't Patrick Mahomes and can't tit for tat his weekly performance, so you're welcome to criticize but this is my POV and this is about Zimmer's decisionmaking.]
--choosing Case Keenum over Teddy. I get it, its 2017, our team is rolling from our defense and there's a fear our position is precarious and the #1 seed is in range. let's not change course. here's the problem. Case Keenum is a small-time QB who is keeping things together for a defensive minded team. He's going to blow it in the playoffs. However Teddy is going to be rusty so you might lose a game or two while he adjusts. Plus you don't know his knee (even though you know Teddy's determination.) What do you do? Zimmer chose to stay the course and keep Keenum and de-activate Teddy. Result was the Eagles got the #1 seed anyway, Keenum played like utter crap for both games because he's not a playoff quarterback and shame on you for thinking he was. Could we have beaten Philly on the road with Teddy? the problem with that NFCCG is like most games with our defense, when the QB reveals they are crap, the defense just deflates and the team sinks. Teddy's defense and offensive teammates believed in him at that time.
--choosing Kirk over Teddy. here's the big one that wrecked the fates of everyone involved. Zimmer wises up that Case Keenum isn't the answer. But they determine Teddy's knee will break, so let's go for Kirk Cousins. Factor #1 with that. With Teddy's health uncertain, they could've just 5th year extended Teddy or signed him for cheap. Kirk got the biggest salary of anyone in the NFL. Imagine what free agents we could've signed that year??? here's the other problem, the Vikings are a good enough team, but they need a leader with intangibles to excel in the playoffs if they hope to win the Super Bowl. Despite Cousin's history as a solid Fantasy Football quarterback he has a strong history of failing in big games and the playoffs and in big situations. He is not going to carry the team to the Super Bowl. it's proven. Teddy already showed promise in his lone playoff appearance. Mike Zimmer made the decision that Teddy's knee was more of a risk than Kirk Cousins. and guess what? Since 2017 no one has had a stronger more durable knee than Teddy Bridgewater in the entire NFL. He even runs and scrambles like he used to. Zimmer was dead wrong about Teddy's knee. and Kirk Cousins has been nothing but brief teases and major disappointments. In 3 years he took a team that was in the NFC championship and missed the playoffs TWICE and he played like crap the one year he did enter the playoffs (outside of a great quarter).
RULING: ZIMMER MUST BE FIRED FOR BEING WRONG ON EVERY MAJOR DECISION THAT WAS MADE SINCE 2017

By my count the Vikings D gave up 58 plays of 21 yard or more, accounting for 30% of all yardage against the team. Now, I'll admit that I don't know what the average is, but that seems high to me.
