How many of you think this team will fall off a cliff and fail miserable because of cap space in 2021? Just curious.
Fall off a cliff?
No,the Vikings don't work like that.More like death by a thousand cuts
But to answer your question,it's not about 2021,it's about the future beyond.
The fact that you care about the Vikings taking the 7th seed this year, and then have asked this question, shows the different mindset between you (and people who think like you) and me (and others like me who take a realistic long term view) That's not a criticism, simply pointing out that the two groups think differently.
The first group are happy to be in the playoff hunt this year, even though making the playoffs with the 7th seed won't win us anything except more of the same from the same leadership group. Then that group of fans will go in to 2021,not with long term optimism, but hoping to make the playoffs in 2021 with the 7th seed, and on and on it goes, one year at a time.
The second group wants and expects more. They realize that the current leadership has peaked, and the GM has made some bad decisions, starting with the Barr contract, then the double down on Cousins, tagging Harris, the Ngakoue move, just desperation ad hoc stuff without a plan.
It is well known that when Shannahan and Lynch took over the 49ers,their plan was to build a championship caliber DL and OL.
You build from the trenches, inside to out,and then fill the skill positions.
The 49ers made the superbowl in year 3 of the new regime, and have built a squad which is anchored by both lines and set up for long term success. I believe they lack the potency at QB,but it's one position they need to upgrade, not holes all over the roster.
Spielman has never built a complete team, and it's time for someone else to be given an opportunity to start fresh.
If the status quo continues, don't be bothered about 2021,2022 is when the edge of the cliff starts to crumble.
