With 8 games behind us, statistical trends are emerging on the Vikings. Most of them are bad, but there are some positives.
Offensive Efficiency Stats 2020 (2019 rank in parenthesis)
Points per drive: 12th (6th)
Yards per drive: 15th (11th)
Ints/Drive: 29th (8th)
TOP per drive: 28th (18th)
3 and out per drive: 19th (10th)
TDs per drive: 7th??? (8th)
FGs per drive: 32nd (12th)
The surprising number here obviously is the 7th ranking in TDs. They are the 3rd best red zone team in the NFL and that might have something to do with it. 32nd in FGs and all of the ints is the biggest difference maker from this year to last.
Defensive Efficiencies Stats 2020 (2019)
Points per drive: 25th (8th)
Yards per drive: 20th (18th)
Ints/Drive: 19th (3rd)
TOP per drive: 25th (25th)
3 and out per drive: 32nd (24th)
TDs per drive: 17th (6th)
FGs per drive: 32nd (26th)
While the defense clearly is worse this year, there were numbers last year that were very similar. It was a bend don't break defense last year, while this year it is a bend, then give up a TD defense. It also appears that a lot of the Vikings success on defense last year came from getting interceptions, something that isn't really maintainable. Sort of the opposite of the offense that had success because a turnover prone QB had a year where he didn't turn the ball over, while this year he is doing just that.
Individual Numbers Offense
Justin Jefferson is 2nd only to Davante Adams in yards per route run.
Adam Thielen is 7th among WRs for most deep passes caught.
Kirk Cousins is #1 among all QBs in deep throw % at 19.1%.
Kirk Cousins has the 2nd most interceptions from a clean pocket at 7.
Dalvin Cook's elusive rating(a stat that measures how good a runner is independently of his blockers) is #1 at 107.6. The
next highest rated RB is Kareem Hunt at 76.5.
Irv Smith is 9th out of 12 among 1st and 2nd year qualifying TEs in yards per route run.
