Next HC - Who Do You Want?

I still think there is a lot to be laid out with Jim. The interest is there on both sides but they still have huge items to discuss today. There are a lot of directions this team could go roster wise. But assuming we get Jim, Its a double edge sword for me. Its obviously the biggest hire in Vikings history probably and lots to be excited about a guy with his track record. lets just say he coached last years team, im guessing we are in the playoffs for sure probably still playing in wild card weekend who knows what could of happened.

Now lets look at the other side of the sword. Its 2022 and this team has a lot of big roster decisions to make. The roster already is not as good as last year with the 1 year deals likely not back and Barr for sure. Now you have Kirk which is the biggest decision of all. If Jim lands here im guessing they are going to extend Kirk. Darren Wolfson who usually has a good scoop said Jim has done his research on Kirk and likes him. So essentially we are the 2018 Vikings again and going down the same path..Dont get me wrong I have a lot more faith in Jim to do this but still I was looking forward to a new path. Again its not guaranteed Kirk is in the future plans but just my guess. Im sure they are going to talk about the plan going forward and Kirk will be the number one discussion.

I'll be happy with Harbaugh, and all signs seem to point to him coming here (I'll still believe it when I see it). However...

If it's true the Steven Ross really did strip down the Dolphins roster and offer Flores $100K for every loss to try and get the #1 pick, and then Flores went out and somehow won 5 games with what wouldn't even count as an NFL roster. Then proceeded to put together back to back winning seasons in that environment. That's a absolutely Herculean feat of coaching and drive to win, so I'd also be happy with Flores.

Where would low 30s put him among his peers?

that's the thing with Kirk and his contract. We can extend him 4 year / $100 million but it will still end up being $30 million per year because of this $45 million cap hit this year (assuming we take $20 million and spread it out over the 4 years to lower 2022 cap to $25 million). This is an example of where back loading the contract really bit us in the ass.

Yeah I mean im sure the 30 million a year is going to be the lowest it will be, and its probably deserving so and with the cap increase it wont be that crazy anyway. Just me looking at the numbers I think 25 would've been ideal in a perfect world on both sides. I just dont know how I feel about the whole thing in general. Still hanging on to Ricks dream if we extend Kirk, granted its with a better leader and environment. I just dont know if it will be enough for a Super Bowl. The defense is in a bad place right now. 

2022 - Kirk is currently taking up 21.3% of the cap with his $45 million cap hit.

To get him under the 13%, his cap hit for 2022 would need to be $27 million or less.

If you could convince Kirk to do a 4 year $100 million then that would put us pretty damn close going forward.

2021 cap was $182 million.
2022 cap is $208 million. An increase of $26 million.
2023 cap based off of that same number would be $234 million.

Kirks 2023 cap hit would need to be $30.5 million or less.

So 4 years $100 million. Take $18 million of the $45 he's due for 2022 (drop his cap hit to $27 million) and add it to the 4 year extension. His contract is essentially 4 years $118 million with an average annual salary of $29.5 million. Which would put him right at the 13% or below mark needed.

(just a note, I don't know exactly how the cap works and not because of signing bonuses as such, just spit ballin out loud)
