I do have to agree, though I'm sure the Vikings are doing their homework on basically every position. They would probably pull the trigger on Mond or Trask if they were available in the 4th round - yes, that's unlikely, but QBs do drop sometimes. Many had Jake Fromm as a 2nd last year and he fell to the 5th.
Sure, they are scouting every position - they had better be, also because 2021's draft pick is 2025's free agent.
But I would guess they would only pull the trigger on Mond or Trask if they fell to the SIXTH round. 4th round is where they will be picking offensive linemen. Seriously, our draft history shows round 4 is seen as a place to fill positional needs, not take a flier.
I guess my point, as obscure as it may seem, is that Tier 1 QBs are such Alphas that they have zero interest in grooming a successor. While Tier 2 QBs are likely to wilt when faced with a potential successor, or often even a highly competent backup.
Excellent point and overall post, and even though I often say not having a great backup is a Spielman trait, you remind us all that it's league-wide.
FSU, great to challenge us all to come up with examples of this QBOTF that many people want. Three cases come to mind for me: Pat Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Dak Prescott. But Mahomes was a very high pick, and Alex Smith was gone within a year; the "grooming" was very limited and Smith's time with the Chiefs was ticking away as soon as Mahomes was picked. Prescott and Wilson are favorite examples because people love the idea of a starting QB coming from round 3 or 4. But both of those QBs took over immediately, were not groomed. Who knows how they would have developed if Tony Romo and Matt Flynn (ugh, I know) had played for a year or two?
I think a lot of us remember the pre-Free Agency period where a QB like Danny White sat behind a starter for 4 years patiently waiting. Is Rodgers the only case of that in the past 20 years?
