I think it's fair to question whether or not Zimmer's defensive acumen is still applicable to the game today... it really does seem like the game has passed him by a bit. His corners are constantly 5 yards off the opponents and his famous double A gap blitz is known well enough that he cannot constantly use it. Teams have figured out how to exploit those things, and I don't think Zimmer has adjusted much.
Mike would still be a very good def. Coordinator for a team in the NFL. He needs to step back down. That's his ceiling. The issue is that he, much like Rick as GM, is in over his head. He's not competent enough to lead the whole team. He is only good at one thing - defense. That is it. Being a HC involves a helluva lot more than just defense. Same for Rick... only good at one thing (and even in that thing, which is drafting, he is very overrated).... but being a GM involves a helluva lot more than just drafting. They both need to step back down. They failed as GM/HC. Too big of a step up for them.
They have both proven they aren’t elite or even great at their jobs. They are both average at best and it’s obvious they won’t be able to deliver a sb, either of them at their jobs. It’s have major flaws that will prevent that. But I agree mike could still be a good dc.
