The Timberwolves took it up the arse from Commissioner David Stern. It was a personal vendetta.
He handicapped the team for a decade partially because he wanted Garnett traded to a big market team.
The Wolves took the worst punishment in major league sports history for doing what all of the other NBA teams had been doing for many years.
Well, the Timberwolves actually got caught. Other teams didn't get caught. I was wondering how much David Stern knew other teams had been doing for many years. i bet he knew. I agree that the punishment was so severe and "death penalty". if i remember it correctly, the owner actually didn't deny it. Stern decided to punish the Timberwolves severely as an example. He wanted to send other teams the messages. David Stern was not fond of Timberwolves. No superstars wanted to play for the Timberwolves. Now KAT wanted to be traded.
The Timberwolves got caught because of a hastily signed contract that Glen Taylor signed going into surgery pressed on him by the agent of a second tier player.
Did David Stern know about other teams doing this? Of course he did. It was one of the least best kept secrets in the NBA. The national television announcers openly talked about this with the contract Rick Fox signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a key player added to what would become a three time NBA championship team. Of course, that was the team in the second largest market in the country, so no foul there.
David Stern had tried to pressure Glen Taylor to trade Garnett to a larger market, and when Taylor refused, the hammer came down. It was a personal vendetta. The scuttlebutt about sending another teams a message is pure window dressing. He could have done that with dozens of other contracts and dozens of other teams, but he chose the Timberwolves in mid-market Minnesota rather than one of his big coast teams. Even so, the loss of one first round pick would have been enough.
As for players not wanting to come to Minnesota to play, it would really help if they signed an experienced coach that actually had been a winner previously. What has Ryan Saunders won in the NBA or NCAA?
I guess it is time for the Vikings to hire Adam Zimmer as head coach.
