Objectively I think there have only been 3 Viking teams in the 44 years since we reached a SB that had a real chance to win one--1987, 1998 and 2009. That's mostly due to not having a great qb, one year of Favre notwithstanding.
A defensive team wins a title about once every 15 years and a great qb led team wins most of the other 14. There are occasional outliers but the strategy for success in today's league has to be the opposite of what the Vikings are currently pursuing. Otherwise you continue on the path of being a franchise that can contend once a decade or so.
The mechanics of how you land that qb are difficult at best otherwise every team would have one. Arguing about how to do it here is interesting but with the current management in place at TCO it's kind of a moot point--they don't believe the obvious, preferring fantasy as they've pursued this defensive approach for years without results.
I don't see how that ever changes or the team becomes relevant in the SB conversation until Rick and Zim are gone and ownership wakes up to reality. They talk a good game for the last 16 years but they don't play one.
