This is an obvious point about this poistion, but not as obvious to our management or it wouldn't be such a glaring hole, so I'll make it anyway.
NOSE:
When we've been the most dominant against the run over the last 23 years, these have been our best Nose Tackles:
Jerry Ball- 6'1 330 lbs.
Pat Wiliams- 6'3 317 lbs.
Linval Joseph- 6'4 329 lbs.
We signed Michael Pierce - 6'0 340 lbs.
This is who is on our roster:
Jaleel Johnson - 6'3 316- this is the closest body type to the above mentioned list. Trouble is, if he can't start now, he never will and we should move on from a roster spot.
Shamar Stephan- 6'5 309- He's the modern day Jason Fisk for those of us 1990's fans. He's not a starter and I'd like to have more than one year over the last 5 where I don't have to listen to Zimmer and pressers saying that he is. Shamar is a backup swing guy at best.
3 TECHNIQUE:
Admittedly spoiled during the last 30 years- Randle, Kevin Williams, Tom Johnson. This position doen't get talked about as much but it is a glaring hole.
Stephan- Based on experience I'd start him here, maybe next to Jaleel. Not that that is a significant upgrade, but the quickest fix I can see at this point. He's not a Nose Tackle.
Armon Watts- 6'5 295- I thought he played the 3 technique pretty well against Seattle last year. I thought he looked lost yesterday.
James Lynch- 6'4 289- They said at the draft they liked his motor. How about getting him some game reps and snaps and lets see if that motor translates. Nothing to lose right now as we're staring at 0-6.
Hercules Mata'afa- 6'2 254- Does not belong on an NFL roster let alone a final Defensive Line.
Thoughts?
