Despite all the concerns here, this group actually played pretty well against the Packers. In the running game, the offensive line was excellent. Cook and Mattison both had plenty of room to work. And in the passing game, they actually held up to the Packers’ pass rush pretty well.
Garrett Bradbury was drastically better than Week 1 a year ago, Dakota Dozier held his own, and it led to an improved interior line. They’ll have to play like that multiple weeks in a row to earn more trust, but it was a positive first game for the O-line.
Cousins was sacked twice, but one of them (the safety) wasn’t the fault of the line and the other was Pro Bowler Za’Darius Smith simply overpowering Brian O’Neill.

It was the worst defensive performance of the Zimmer era and there was never any adjustment that made it seem like the Vikings might come back. He’s usually great at knowing when to dial up blitzes, but those didn’t work Sunday. His defense continued to let Davante Adams beat them and they failed to get any pass rush. Zimmer sent an extra rusher 43 percent of the time after averaging blitzes only 25 percent of the time last year.
Offensively, Gary Kubiak had some hiccups in his first game as a play-caller and the Vikings relied more on the running game in neutral situations than any other team in the NFL in Week 1. Both Kubiak and Zimmer have a lot that needs fixing this week.
