Part of the reason the Vikings have been able to work near the cap ceiling like this is because of signing bonuses, which come due eventually. It’s a balancing act, but it also requires owners who are willing to write the big checks. Wilfs continue to show they’ll spend to win.

And how's that strategy working out for us? Wilf is spending money to win? Looks like he's spending money just to avoid becoming Detroit. Typical Vikings. Patriots lay the dynasty blueprint, and the Vikings do the opposite by remaining loyal to mediocrity.

For what, 3 or 4 games a year? Even when he's somewhat healthy, like last year, he was next to useless the 2nd half of the season. Useless in every big game. In his final 8 games, including the 2 playoff games, not a single game over 3.4 YPC. And then there was that pathetic 49ers game when we needed him most.

I thought we would have learned our lesson with Peterson, about not giving RB's huge contracts. Mattison and Boone even proved to everyone any RB can produce in Kubiaks system. This franchise continues to baffle me. I wish I were joking when I say it seems like our only goal is to just not become Detroit, but that's what all the evidence points to. Every move we made recently was all about maintaining the 9-7 status quo. Not a single move that shows it's trying to fill the trophy case with anything other than participation trophies.

Peterson's contract worked out, but go ahead and re-write history. His contract wasn't holding this team back from winning it all and his being on the team was the only thing that made most of those seasons watchable.
Cook's contract won't be the thing holding us back either going forward. He could not play another snap on it and that missing cap wouldn't be the reason this team doesn't win it all.

Get over it people. We extended a RB for a third less than the QB makes a year, and not that much more than we paid Reiff prior to his pay cut. It isnt a franchise crippling contract, and we were screwed next year and the year after by our cap space anyway. At least now we have the chance of watching an explosive playmaker each Sunday.

Him being on this team with that contract might have prevented us from paying someone to be on the team who could have helped us fill the trophy case, which by definition would have made it more watchable than whatever Peterson did for us. Even if that chance was 1% because 1 is greater than 0 ... the percentage of trophies Peterson helped us put in the trophy case.

My point wasn't discredited.

I already conceded the $18 million more guaranteed in that exact same post. But regardless of the structure, a 5-year $70 million deal for a RB three years ago is comparable.

Again, considering these outrageous contracts we're seeing just a few years later, it's not out of the question the Steelers would be willing to pull the trigger on Cook. They tried with Bell. But you can believe it's crazy talk. That's fine.

Somewhere between Austin Ekeler's contract and Derrick Henry would have made sense and Dalvin is just above Henry. 5 yr/ 50 M is what I would have offered and it ended up being 5/63. Dalvin is a special back and it's nice to have him locked up for awhile.

... and that is why the Vikings offense falters in big games. The NFL is not a running league anymore.

As far being around a long time, most running backs don't make it to the end of their second contract, and Cook has a history of major injuries.

What a horrible, but ty[ical Vikings move. Throw money we dont have, on a RB who misses half a season every year. He has a tooth ache and is gone for a few months. The Wilfs think they can just throw money at which ever player Ricky points at, and the Vikings can win a SB. We have wasted so much money and time on a QB and RB. RBs are a dime a dozen esp. ones as injury prone as Cook is. Blah it doesnt matter the deal is done.

Well I think you're overlooking the durability aspect of this equation. Cook is worth the contract ability wise, but certainly not reliability wise. Bell was coming off back to back nearly 1300 yard seasons, and he played the entire season in 2016 and 2017, only missing games because of suspension (beginning of 2016) or because the Steelers had clinched (2017). In 2016 he got much better as the season went on and in 2017 he was consistent throughout. Cook can't make it a full season, and when he comes close, he doesn't have the stamina and pretty much becomes a non factor the 2nd half of the season. I don't see the Steelers making the same offer had Bell consistently missed games because of injury or because he didn't show up half the time.

Oh, you did not read all of those, "Will he play or won't he" news stories?

Same for Kamara, same for McCaffrey, ... agents send notes to the press, but the players says, "I want to play, I'll be ready."

The NFL CBA makes holdouts much more difficult now, but the threat is still there.

I believe Cook did skip out on some of the offseason programming that the Vikings did, but he really had no choice but to report to training camp. I believe the story was reported by Adam Schefter, but I don't know if the Cook camp ever officially said they were holding out. He had since claimed that he never planned to hold out, despite skipping out on the aforementioned programming.
