Interesting player usage
Jeff Gladney did not play on defense at all, which came as a big surprise considering he was rotating with Cam Dantzler during camp. Whether he remains behind Dantzler will be worth watching.
Yannick Ngakoue only played around one-third of the snaps. Twitterers said the broadcast mentioned an injury but Zimmer said it was the plan to rotate. Jalyn Holmes saw a lot of work but rarely appeared to find his way into the backfield to rush Rodgers.
Justin Jefferson rarely played in the first half but ended up on the field for 84% of Cousins drop backs. He caught two passes on three targets.
Irv Smith Jr. was on the field for a majority of plays but saw only one target. That can’t be the plan going forward.
What do we make of the offensive “surge”
By the final numbers, you might think Sunday’s game was a good old fashioned shootout. But the game was largely separated by two scores, making a lot of the Vikings’ successes empty.
“I think they approached us differently in the second half,” Zimmer said when he was asked if the offense found something or the Packers backed off.
PFF notes that “through the first three quarters of action, Cousins took 16 dropbacks; he was sacked on two, scrambled on three and completed just two passes over 10 yards downfield.”
Someone on Twitter commented that Cousins is the best QB when the game is out of reach in the NFL. Well it’s not that hard to check recent history on that matter…
Not counting Sunday’s game, Cousins has the third most yards in the NFL since 2015 when down two scores only behind Jameis Winston and Philip Rivers and the fourth most touchdowns. Winston is the only player with more pass attempts in such situations.
Specifically in the fourth quarter when down two scores, Cousins is third but interestingly averages only 6.6 yards per pass attempt and completes 67.0% of throws.
It doesn’t appear by the numbers that he is better than other QBs, just that he’s been in that spot a good amount. Sunday’s game probably reminded him of the Washington years in which his defenses didn’t do him many favors.
Next week
All of the sudden next week is huge. The Colts are vulnerable as evidenced by their loss to the Jaguars and the Vikings’ next two opponents are the very strong Tennessee Titans and DeShaun Watson-led Texans. After that they get Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan and Rodgers again.
Rivers threw for 362 yards against the Jags but tossed two picks in classic form. There’s a chance for the Vikings to survive the early part of the schedule and build some confidence on defense. Going 0-2 would put them in a very big hole.
