And if he did, should that bother Vikings fans?
The answer to that first question is easy: Cousins contract is far more player friendly. He is in complete control of his destiny, while Mahomes signed an extension that KC only has to honor through 2022 (they do have to pay the current year's salary to cut him) Even if you assume KC does honor the contract to the end(a pretty safe assumption), and Mahomes gets every penny, he still probably never makes as much as Cousins during Cousins remaining years (assuming the Vikings keep stupidly giving him these extensions).
In 2 years, Cousins worth to the Vikings increased from 27 million per year to 33. If the salary cap continues to climb at this rate(ignoring Covid concerns), the next time Cousins is up for an extension he will be getting 39 million per year over two years. Following that, he would be getting a 2 year extension of 45 million per year. That likely is the last big extension Cousins could realistically get due to his age. How does that compare to Mahomes during that timeframe?
Mahomes 2022-2026: 197.75
Cousins 2022-2026: 213
Wtf?
So should that bother Vikings fans? Well, yeah. Cap space is a valuable commodity that needs to be properly allocated in order to win Super Bowls. Giving a top 12 QB more of the cap than the best QB in the NFL is not properly allocating that commodity. Cousins cap hit hurts us more than Mahomes' hurts the Chiefs, and we get less benefit from Cousins than the Chiefs gets from Mahomes. That should upset you.
