Well it's kind of hard to watch TNF when they gives us Houston vs Cincy, and now Rams vs 49ers. I imagine FOX and CBS fight the NFL tooth and nail to keep the better matchups so they're forced to give us the duds on TNF. Opening weekend is about the only TNF game worth watching usually, and Thanksgiving. Otherwise I even hate when the Vikings play TNF, which we thankfully don't do this year. We play Thanksgiving at noon, which isn't as bad. It feels like another bye week after a TNF game, and I motherf****ing hate the bye week. Which is another thing I'd like to see end. There are some good TNF match-ups coming up though. At the same time however there are some lousy SNF and MNF those same weeks, so that's when they could have scheduled these better match-ups. Nobody wants to watch a heavyweight fight between 2 tired teams.

I certainly hate weeks like this, but I have to think it's better for the players to have a bye week. I personally hate week 4-6 bye weeks though... I suspect though that you're going to see an 18 game schedule with 2 byes at some point in the not so distant future... that might be what it takes to get rid of TNF... TNF should be for opening night, Thanks giving, and you can argue Christmas...

There was a lot of All Out War action on the second episode of The Walking Dead’s eighth season last night, but the real-life drama was on a tight Sunday Night Football and the roller coaster of a Game 5 in the 2017 World Series. In a big night for baseball, SNF snagged a 9.4/15 in metered market results while the epic 5 hour and 17 minute long World Series Game 5 nailed a 12.8/24 in the early ratings. Due to bad weather in New England, Nielsen omitted Boston, Providence and Hartford from the MM 56 market round up.

Still, in the World Series’ best result this year so far, that puts the Game 5 up a muscular 36% from last night’s Steelers vs. Lions game.

With that, as the league and broadcasters have been losing ratings traction and snared in political controversy this season, last night’s Week 8 NFL game is down a hard 25% for SNF from last week’s gridiron battle. That Super Bowl LI re-match saw the New England Patriots blow out the Atlanta Falcons 23-7.

Year-to-year, Sunday’s Steelers’ win fell 17% from the comparable October 30, 2016 face-off when the big draw Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles 29-23.

Monday Night Football ratings failed to clear a low bar in Week 8.

monday night footballBroncos-Chiefs earned a 6.3 rating and 10.4 million viewers on ESPN’s Monday Night Football last night, down a tick in ratings and 1% in viewership from Vikings-Bears last year (6.4, 10.5M) and down 19% and 16% respectively from Colts-Panthers in 2015 (7.8, 12.4M).

Kansas City’s win was the lowest rated and least-watched Week 8 MNF game ever, falling below the previous marks set last year. Dating back to last season, 17 of the last 26 Monday night games have had less than a 7.0 rating — topping the previous seven seasons combined (14).

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees told reporters that playing on Thursday night is "absolutely" not safe after his team suffered a slew of injuries during a 20-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

"It's 100 percent a product of playing on Thursday night," Brees told reporters of the high injury rate. "Do you understand what guys' bodies go through in a game? And then to have to turn around four days later and to play? ... Is this smart as it pertains to guys' health and safety? No, absolutely not."

Here is an interesting take, and I will summarize it...

1. Americans did not particularly care about sports for the majority of its existence. People barely watched the NFL and preferred the college scene. The NBA was poorly rated and not too culturally important, even playoff games were on tape delays. It was rare for sporting events to sell out.

2. Baby Boomers come of age to a point where they have enough money and power to drive a major fad. Not just tennis as a fad, but professional sports in general, and football in particular, as a fad. 1980-2010 is the Baby Boomer Era sports fad. The NFL is a Baby Boomer relic.

3. Other generations do not care as much. Generation X, Millenials and Generation Z say they never watch sports at a clip of about 25 percent. Participation in football as a player at the high school and college level peaked in 2009. This is a Baby Boomer fad at the tail end of a run.

4. The anthem protests pissed off the most fanatical sports nuts, the people who created the fad, White Baby Boomers. MURKA.

5. The NFL is a dying White Baby Boomer relic, like cruiser motorcycles.

TNF isn't going away...

In most other ways, the RFP looks similar to ones handed out in previous years. The league could sell the main package to one or two TV nets. NFL Net has to carry a minimum of seven games exclusively in order to comply with affiliate deals with pay-TV operators. A digital platform will stream the broadcast games, part of what the league calls a “tri-cast.” Broadcasters also can submit bids on packages of varying sizes, from 4-11 games.

But the document also makes it clear that the league is open to making significant changes to the “TNF” package. The NFL has the flexibility to change the number of games in the package, which currently is at 18. The league has told media execs that it would even consider moving more games off of Thursday nights. This season’s “TNF” schedule had three games on Saturday, one on Sunday morning from London and one on Monday afternoon (Christmas Day).

The RFP also asks bidders to consider using new tech and commercial ideas for the package, conforming with the NFL’s view that “TNF” is a laboratory for experiment. This season, for example, NBC used SkyCam as its main camera feed for two “TNF” games. One element that’s not likely to change: the NFL will continue to rotate the teams playing on Thursdays to ensure that all teams have a “TNF” slot.

This round of bidding will be interesting to gauge the interest that broadcast nets have in “TNF.” CBS and NBC pay a combined $450M per year for the current package. Increasingly, TV execs complain about the package -- voicing concerns on everything from the quality of football to oversaturation of the league’s games. Broadcast execs have blamed the presence of “TNF” as one of the reasons for declining ratings, believing it takes good games out of the Sunday afternoon packages, hurting CBS and Fox. Those execs also they believe it leads to viewer fatigue, hurting NBC’s “SNF” and ESPN’s “MNF.”

The “TNF” audience so far have been disappointing in ‘17. This season, CBS averaged 14.1 million viewers for its five games, down 4% from last season and down 20% from ’15, when it carried eight Thursday games. NBC has averaged 13.5 million viewers for its five “TNF” games (which excludes Thanksgiving night), down a significant 21% from its debut “TNF” season last year. NBC’s Broncos-Colts game last Thursday drew 10.6 million viewers, marking the least-viewed “TNF” game yet on broadcast TV, dating back to start in ‘14. The package has been a money-loser for the broadcast nets, failing to bring in the ad revenue they were expecting.

Even with those complaints, both CBS and NBC are expected to submit bids. After all, “TNF” still is one of the most-watched series on all of TV. Even with the ratings drops, NFL games still produce the biggest audiences on TV.

I have hardly watched any Monday Night Football games since it moved to ESPN.
