Let's put a hypothetical to you Ness. I agree completely that we need to land a franchise QB and it starts by rolling the dice until it happens. Would you be open to trading up from 22 to 12 or 14 if Herbert or Love were available? If so which would you take? A trade to 12 would cost our 2nd round but we could trade down from 25 and gain an additional pick. Just curious if you think either of those QBs are worth the move up. Remember that Cousins extension doesn't have a no-trade clause so he could be moved when the replacement was ready.
Well if we are gambling like that then I would rather take love who has a much higher ceiling than Herbert, but if you are looking for safe than Herbert is your guy. I think Herbert should be at least in the cousins level of qb’s, but I’m not sure he will be much better. He has accuracy issues and isn’t a natural thrower. Love has some decision making issues, but is a natural thrower and very mobile. Sometimes he throws better when in the run. If I am looking to gamble as you put it I. That situation I’m going in on love. We already have a safe kind of qb in cousins that can’t consist carry the offense if he needs to. Love has the chance to do that, but again he needs the right coaches and scheme that favor his strengths. Look at teams like az, kc, and Baltimore. They all drafted qb’s with high ceilings that weren’t sure things (luck/Manning), but all 3 teams put coaches and schemes around them that favor their strengths. That is what you have to do nowadays. This includes the players around the qb to fit the qb. All 3 of those teams should be competing every year for a deep run in the playoffs so long as they keep the same scheme/coaches with those qbs. Also assuming their gm’s can put a decent defense around them.
Herbert was one of the absolute most accurate QBs in college football. www.google.com/amp/s/www.si.com/.amp-oregon/college/oregon/football/new-stat-shows-that-justin-herbert-is-among-the-most-accurate-qbs-in-the-nation
He also can throw easily from any angle, off his back foot etc. You might not like his mechanical motion, but it's very quick and he has a cannon arm. His pass is literally beautiful, perfect touch, deep ability is phenomenal, etc.
In addition to all of that, Herbert has easily the most tantalizing physical attributes of any prospect in the draft. He is a solid 237 pounds with a cannon arm, running a sub 4.7 He is MORE mobile then Love.
Love on the other hand wasnt even close to as accurate, has lesser physical ability, and far worse decision making. His numbers were atrocious for a first round prospect.
All in all, I'd trade up for Herbert if that's what it took, I would be disappointed to get Love and pissed to trade up for him. Heres hoping a good one falls, which isnt impossible in a deep QB class like this one.
