This is where the detractors would point out how he's only ever played against 3rd string preseason talent while ignoring all the other QB's who have played against 3rd string preseason talent without coming close to putting up the same numbers as Sloter
The detractors seem to think the Vikings, and the other 31 teams all have some sort of crystal ball that lets them know if a QB has the talent to play at the NFL level because as everyone knows, all 32 teams have always gotten it right at the QB position.
There can be exceptions to this rule - DE Ifeadi Odenigbo was cut by 3 different teams in 2018 and now is on track to be a starter in 2020 - but Sloter's last hope is likely going to be the XFL in 2021 and do what Phillip Walker did.
Warner still had to wait for an opportunity to present itself though. It's not like his play alone is what made the Rams take notice. Which just supports my point even more about how nobody has a clue about who will or won't work out until they actually give someone an opportunity.
I don't have Warners preseason numbers from back then, but maybe he was bad at practice or something. I don't know why nobody was interested in him, but Holmgren, Mariucci, Reid, and Gruden all failed to recognize his talent when the Packers cut him and kept Ty Detmer. Favre was their starter so 3rd string wasn't a priority I guess.
Then in 1999 the Rams made Warner available for the Browns expansion draft, but the Browns chose Scott Milanovich instead, so again, why do so many people think NFL scouts, GM's, and coaches know what they're doing as far as recognizing talent goes? That's the very freaking year Warner led the Rams to 13-3 and a Lombardi, so what were the Rams or Warner doing wrong that summer for that to be such a huge miss? Oh bummer Trent Green is out for the year, guess we gotta roll with bag boy. I wonder what fans were saying about all that. B-b-but 30 teams passed on him for 4 years, s-s-so he must not be any good.
