Griffen to void his deal

BRob and Newman both restructured with a pay cut and no added guarantees.  Both were subsequently released.  That's the only type of "restructure" I would consider for Joseph and Rhodes, and in both cases they would not figure into long term plans (including possible release at this years 53 man roster cut).  Otherwise, I also want younger, cheaper players to replace those two.  Jaleel Johnson looked good when he played last season and we also have one or two other young DTs who could make some noise.  Hill (and likely even Boyd) have already replaced Rhodes in my eyes.  If Hughes heals quickly and stays healthy (big ifs) and Mac winds up returning (I'm not convinced anybody is going to give him a large FA contract), we may not be in such awful shape at CB.  Sure, we still need a couple more bodies, but they don't have to be expensive FAs or first round picks.  The only argument I can see for Rhodes still being around is if we tear up his contract and pay him at or near the vet minimum.  He might make a good backup if we're desperate.

This was expected... and hey, the Vikings no longer are in the red! Of course, they still don't have a ton of cap to play with.

It makes sense for Griffen to do this so he can get one more pay day [before his career is likely over] with some guaranteed money (only $800K of his deal was still guaranteed). With Odenigbo emerging, it's likely he could take Griffen's role, but they will need somebody to fill Ifeadi's role. Griffen played 75% of the snaps and Ifeadi about 45%, so they should be looking for a guy who can fill that 45%. I wouldn't count on Weatherly getting re-signed after a poor 2019 season.

Yarbrough isn't too different from Odenigbo, as he's a guy who's impressed in the preseason and has been sitting on the practice squad for a while. I would still like some competition for that role.

At this stage I think it would be wise to use some of our guys on the roster that will be part of the future. Ain't nothing wrong with Jaleel Johnson. Same with Odenigbo and Holmes. Love to see Hill and Hughes as our outside CBs. Play the guys we drafted. None of those players I just mentioned are rookies.


Of course we need some more bodies! I like to see us sign 1 FA at one of our biggest weaknesses. Last year we signed Kline to replace Remmers at RG and that was solid. Everyone on here must know by now who I want playing LG for us next year. His initials are JT and I think it would help our OL A LOT. A 4 year deal similar to what Billy Turner signed last season with GB. I think the team could handle a FA signing like that.

We have 10 picks in the upcoming draft and we haven't traded anyone yet. Hell, we might end up with a few other picks if we decide to trade someone. Last draft we came away with 5 starters out of 12 picks. Only one of them was a 1st rounder.

You're right, all the damn players we're likely to acquire this upcoming season don't have to be expensive FAs or 1st rounders to make this team better.
