With 3-4 specialist Dom Capers arriving as a senior defensive assistant, Zimmer told reporters on Tuesday that he’s looking to “get some fresh ideas,” via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

“Dom has been doing this for a long time and I know he’s always had really good ideas,” Zimmer said. “I just wanted a really good idea guy.”

I never really bought into the narrative that Zimmer is stubborn. And with recent hires, it's obvious that his ego isn't as big as people like to claim either. Weird, who knew!? Looks like he's putting people in positions for innovation as well as to allow him more time to focus on being HC/to better manage the whole team. Good for him understanding what's at stake and refusing to sit idle.

If Zimmer gives up play calling to focus more on his HC duties then I'll buy the "not so stubborn" narrative.

I don't see how Dom can hurt. Just wonder how he can help. I doubt he has alot of input on game plans and certainly nothing on game day. His last 2 jobs were these senior defensive assistant gigs. Is that all he wants now? Give me young and innovative. We get semi-retired assistants. At least I doubt Dom comes out of this semi-retired status next year like Gary did. Zimmer isn't stepping down or moving on.

I'll say this much. We do like to acquire the experienced coaches. We've had a ton of former head coaches on staff. Since we ain't really advanced far playoff wise I say results are mixed there.

Didnt he coach 3-4 defense in Dallas for a bit under Parcels

Dom Capers sucked in Green Bay. Their passing defense was often some of the lowest in the NFL.

He's just the kind of guy Zimmer would bring in for another trip back to the 20th Century.

I know it was a while ago, but Capers first two years with GB were great. The were top three in scoring D each of those years, including their SB run.

If he was our DC I'd understand but he isnt.

Capers has had a ton of success in this league, I'm all for him as an assistant.

The Viking organization has reached the phase where it's cluelessness about how to achieve a championship has led it into the wasteland of hiring more and more managers.

Rather than rip the band-aid off and admit that their ultraconservative risk-free corporate approach has failed, Wilf and company have now run with another dubious corporate notion--that more management somehow will lead to success.

Just a few more staff additions and every player will have his very own coach. What could possibly go wrong, lol.

When's the last time a fanbase got excited over the hiring of a defensive assistant?

I think some here are trying to read between the lines really hard when there aren't even lines to begin with.

probably wont even mention his name once the season rolls around. Zim didnt hire him to take over any aspect of the defense so anybody saying Capers past defenses all sucked, while true, it doesnt matter because he is here strictly to give zimmer some ideas on 3-4 scheme stuff as new wrinkles to our defense. if youre not changing in the NFL youre not winning. Zims classic D has been figured out a little bit recently and with all returning starters and coaches, teams had seen almost everything.

if this move in any way helps Barr be put in pass rushing situations more often than coverage im all for it. we're paying this guy "splash play" money and he never has any.

Did you see the Packers' defense under Capers? They were horrible! Have you seen them post-Capers? Like night and day.

Not sure what impresses you about this move, there's a reason he was unemployed.

horrible towards the end when ted Thompson refused to sign free agents. His defense was top ten during most of his time in green bay including when they won the super bowl after the 2010 season. He's also been around great defenses much of his coaching career. Im not sure what doesn't impress you about the hire to be honest

During his time in GB Capers drafted some good players in Raji, Matthews, Burnett, Hayward, Daniels etc. Perhaps he can help in drafting some reinforcements on D for us in April.
