Donald "Reche" Caldwell, who spent seven seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver after a stellar career at Florida, was killed in his hometown of Tampa, Florida, on Saturday night, his mother confirmed to TMZ. He was 41.

Police confirmed to ESPN that there was a homicide but would not say whether Caldwell had been killed.

Caldwell helped lead the Gators to an SEC championship in 2000. He was selected in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers, where he played until 2005, before signing with the New England Patriots in 2006. He was the Patriots' leading receiver that year with 760 yards.

He was with the team the next offseason -- when he crossed paths with Wes Welker -- until being released at the end of the preseason.

Welker tweeted Sunday: "Reche's smile and attitude were contagious! My thoughts and prayers go out to Bubba Caldwell and his family!"

Welker met Caldwell in 2004 when they were with the Chargers and then reconnected in the offseason before the 2007 season in New England.

Former Patriots teammate Benjamin Watson also tweeted: "Always kept us laughing and light hearted. Always had the biggest smile. Always had the greatest stories. Sad to hear about the passing of my teammate Reche Caldwell. May the Lord comfort his family during this time."

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott plans to sign his $31.4 million exclusive franchise tender by Monday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The two sides still have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal. The Cowboys had placed the franchise tag on Prescott on March 18.

By signing his franchise tender, Prescott will be contractually obligated to report to training camp on time, whether or not he and the Cowboys can figure out a long-term deal.

Prescott's decision to sign the franchise tender is not an indication that a long-term agreement is close, league sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.

The fact that Prescott will be one of the highest-paid players in the NFL -- and the potential his franchise tag increases by a mandatory 20% next season to $37.7 million with a flat or lower cap in 2021 -- is incentive for Dallas to secure a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline.

Said one source of the pressure on the Cowboys: "Their problem is the second year, because this salary cap is going to crash unless there's an intermediate deal. They would have to gut their team to keep him then. So there's even more incentive for the Cowboys to do a long-term deal with Dak because of the coronavirus and where the cap might be next year."
