Also, I've done plenty of CNA-type work over the years ... it's not as bad as you're making it seem. It's actually really rewarding. It's definitely not all rainbows and lollipops, though. That's for sure! So, I'll give you that...

Part of it is technique, and part of it is scheme. If a lineman is told to pull to a spot and then zone block from there, that is scheme. Some coaches want that player to be there no matter what; other coaches want that player to clean up defenders along the way if there is no one assigned to that defender by the scheme. Far too often, I see offensive linemen bypass defenders on the way to the space only to have that bypassed defender make the tackle behind him. Who cares if the lineman got to the "hole" and blocked no one when the ball carrier never made it to that hole.

Football is a game of numbers. The offense starts with one less blocker than defenders. To have offensive linemen often blocking empty space makes the numbers worse against them and gives an advantage to the defense. Defenders don't always end up where the play has them drawn up, and it is a failure of scheme not to address defenders when they don't fit the preconceived plan.

I have studied not only "American" rules football but also a lot of Canadian rules football. There are huge advantages for the offenses in Canadian rules including multiple motion, motion toward the line of scrimmage, and a one yard buffer, but the defense has 12 players and there are only three downs. Under both rulesets, it is critical for offensive linemen to reach the defender, engage, and control.

For a decade, NFL officials have allowed blocking by getting inside the pads. The Vikings don't use this technique as they should, so defenders slide off and make the tackle or cannot be redirected around the pocket resulting in a sack or pressure. Having slow developing routes and a quarterback that makes reads slower than Helen Keller exacerbates and exposes the scheme and technique deficiencies. 

I haven't kept up on actual Vikings related topics so maybe this has already been said. Kubiac is the obvious and easy choice. From Zim's perspective a little continuity on offense could possibly save his job and earn him a long term contract. The flip side is if they begin the year flat Kubiak is also an easy choice to replace him as HC mid-season.
