Everyone, I am interested in seeing other's thoughts on my wishes/dreams for the remainder of the Vikings offseason & mostly for the draft this year.
First off, I wish for the Vikings to acquire Williams in trade with the Redskins for our 3rd round pick, preferably the last one. However, if our earlier 3rd round pick can get us an above average LT coming off a 365+ day contact break, I will give the Redskins that pick. Maybe other post 4th round picks if the Redskins require more than our 3rd round pick, but they won't be a part of my first offer to them. Tough to have such an estimate apart of my hopes for an off season, but since my top hope is to get Williams as our 2020 LT, I ask all to play along with this pre draft or during draft acquisition.
Next, on to the draft and with what I hope is still our two first round, one 2nd round, and remaining 3rd round picks, I wonder if I can I get one of the following prospects from the remaining position groups?
Position-Prospects 2020 draft reasonable wishlist of mine for a championship caliber Vikings team this season:
CB - Henderson, Fulton, Gladney, & maybe Jaylon Johnson (in that order but tough to say who fits best with our possibly changing pass coverage scheme/needs)
T - Jones, USC's Jackson, & Cleveland (an O'Neill clone probably still there for us in a 2nd round trade up scenario?) in that order
WR - Mims, Reagor, & Shenault (all are on very similar grades to me)
EDGE- Iowa's edge defender or Weaver, with Weaver most likely being available for us after round 1
In different mocks, I have come close to this outcome drafting a desired CB at 22, a desired WR at 25 (now 3/5ths to my wish), and seeing both Weaver & Cleveland fall to a draft pick in mid round 2, at or near our 2nd round position.
Obviously I would listen to our scouts reviews on these prospects and their rankings, but if the Vikings want to draft them like I grade them, picks we have after round 3 could be used to move up in or into round 2 to get Cleveland & Weaver in the that round. We have good draft capital to use this year, and as much as Rick loves to use his late round picks in past drafts, this year, I feel they should all be used to improve our draft positions in order to move up for one of my desired prospects in each of the following positions (CB, T, WR, & EDGE). Zim & Rick, both being in Vikings career defining season, should draft for the now as opposed to the future (picks beyond 3rd round should be used to improve draft repositioning, not to pick special teams improvements). I want 4 positions, and prospects we can gain after the 3rd round are not seen as that valuable to me as much as the value they can give us by increasing our draft positions by trading up.
Is the following starting roster possible to us or am I just dreaming based on several mock drafts and estimated requirements in a Williams trade?
OFFENSE:
Cousins
Cook-Ham
Smith/Rudolph
O'Neil-Samuria-Bradbury-Reiff-Williams
Thielen-Mims/Reagor/Shenault(#25 pick)
and rookie Cleveland as back up tackle waiting his turn after Williams moves on (Cleveland acquired via 2nd round pick after some trading up) or St. John's tackle Bartch at current 2nd round spot with maybe a slight trade up.
-requires pick #25 and our 2nd round pick after maybe a little trading up from all of our available draft capital.
DEFENSE:
Hunter-Pierce-Johnson-rookie Weaver with trade up into earlier 2nd round spot to get him (tough acquisition to do that may require draft capital from both this year & next year to complete)
current weak side LB (forgot name)-Kendricks-Barr
Hughes-Hill/Gladney-Smith-Harris
-Versus GB & Detroit, all 5 DB's start while weak side rookie LB takes a seat.
I feel very possible to get this roster in next week & change. I also couldn't ask for much more given the roster position we are currently at.
2020 Offense:
good run blocking O-line,
an improved pass blocking O-line,
very good full back,
2 solid TB's,
2 solid TE's,
good veteran WR that Cousins is already familiar with,
new possible speedster at other WR spot after some adjustment time with Cousins/NFL caliber competitiont/speed,
and
QB that put up good numbers already but with worse pass blocking than he will get this year.
With Kubiak's 100% influence on offense, probably more play action passing (Cousins's strength), and my desired off season additions, I have no problem envisioning top 5 NFC offense next year.
2020 Defense:
Pierce is run stopper,
Hunter is 1 of the best DE's in the league,
Jaleel Johnson should be ready to make a name for himself,
Edge guy in waiting will be able to hold his own and I hope Weaver could be one of the steals to this draft (or move Barr to edge, especially passing downs),
Kendricks is already top ILB in the league,
WLB held his own last year, so logical to expect little improvements,
Barr played slightly above average & don't expect much decrease,
we could have best safety tandem in the league,
I like Hughes to exhibit improvement upon a solid year when he played,
and
for our CB's, Hill, in limited time, showed he was at the very least adequate, and I expect improvements from him just because of more time with Zim's coaching & system, I love Hughes potential still, and getting 1st round CB prospect in rich CB draft this year will give us another quality (perhaps starting quality) CB by the end of this year.
Bottom line, I like our outlook for this season and I want to see other opinions on where I am off or where others agree with my thoughts. I am admittingly a Vikings optimist, as if one can't tell, but with my off season wishes coming true, I like our chances at competing for NFC 2020 crown, home field advantage, and our shot at making our title game record at 1-4.
