I think for me, why I say yes to this question is, lemme unpack it in a different way:

It's 1997 and we're about to draft. Randy Moss falls to us. We are visited by a genie who says he's going to revolutionize football and he's a 1st ballet HOFer and will be the best Viking ever lived. However, even though we'll have team and some playoff success, we won't win a super bowl.

Passing on Randy Moss here most likely sends our franchise into a tailspin. I feel we should take Randy Moss and enjoy the success he brings us.

The same thing applies for the head coach who can get us 5 playoff games but not win the super bowl. Most coaches don't go to the playoffs. Statistically. This year only 12 coaches out of like 31 made it. And over 6 years these stats became more devastating when you factor in coaches who get fired for failures, etc. So ultimately a coach who can be successful for us over 6 years is a good proposition. We get a lot of fun, successful seasons guaranteed.

Finally, the alternative isn't that we win a super bowl. Saying no to the hire doesn't equal a super bowl win. In fact, the chances are more likely that saying no to this hire results in a lot of awful seasons. So I think I prefer to stick with the sure thing, so to speak!

I was following you, although not agreeing with you, up until the last sentence. Up to that point you were just making it clear we measure success differently. You are OK with largely regular season success, and I am not.

And i agree that saying no does not guarantee success as in Super Bowl, but we know that saying yes definitely means no Super Bowl. So I choose to roll the dice, and take a chance that we find someone who can improve on the 2-3 playoff record, even if it means possibly doing worse at times. Yes thats a gamble, but taking the sure-thing-mediocrity doesnt make any sense UNLESS we are coming off of years of total futility. We aren't though.

Zimmer's team was coached well enough that game to win it and move on. Guess why they didn't? On a few key plays, the players FAILED TO EXECUTE ... and those failures were really, REALLY bad. It happens.

That playoff loss gets brought up REPEATEDLY around here as a really bad negative. It's actually incredibly ridiculous to think of it that way, considering the context. And now the two playoff WINS against the Saints are being looked at in a NEGATIVE WAY, too.

You just can't win with some people, even if ya like, ya know, win... Nope, still not good enough ... should have won by more.

Even if we go through new hc’s every 3 to 4 years because that guy doesn’t have us trending towards a championship, you still keep going after that guy and not hire a safe (will get you 8-11 wins consistently, but 1 and done normally in playoffs) as we are aspiring for a sb championship. I don’t think we ever give up that quest. If we have a coach and gm who are who they are and can only get you to a certain point we’ll then it’s obviously time for a change. That goes also for keep trying to find the guys and not settle for mediocrity.

As I pointed out with my Leslie Frazier example, even if the alternative is a 0.0001% chance, it's better than 0%. Isn't the goal to win a Super Bowl?

How do you come to that conclusion? If this hire only goes 2-3 in the playoffs, that means he's only going to make the playoffs 50% of the time. You can conclude from his playoff record that none of the seasons will be very good. It reeks of a team that sneaks in as a 6th seed because not many 13-3 teams only win 2 games in 3 playoff appearances.

If all 32 teams kept the same coaches for 6 years, and they took turns making the playoffs, each coach would make 2.25 playoff appearances in those 6 years. So congratulations, the 2-3 coach that you want to hire is slightly above average, and he didn't win a Super Bowl.

That's a straw man. They're not necessarily bad hires, but they clearly weren't the best hire either. You need the best hire and hiring a guy you know will go 2-3 is not the best hire. Rolling the dice on someone else could be a worse hire, but it also gives you a better chance of winning a Super Bowl, which last time I checked, is the ultimate goal. But clearly some of you are content with just being entertained enough in the regular season, and from what I can tell, winning at least 1 more game than you lose qualifies as enough entertainment.

lol. i like the premise of your question, and if you did truly have a crystal ball, then probably no. However you never quite know what that 7th year might have? However a closer look beyond the pure W-L shows me that the losses aren't necessarily Zimmer's fault.

I do like Zimmer, and I think more blame falls on Spielman, as our biggest weaknesses i found personnel issues. Namely our offensive line which whenever we reach that border between shaky and good enough if we will it, Spielman moves on to other areas instead of fortifying our line to be good for two consecutive seasons. And then of course Kirk Cousins, whom i will blame 100% on us not being in the playoffs last season.

And my problems with Zimmer are based more on to whatever extent he played in our major offseason decisions with Spielman. But as a pure coach I like Zimmer.
