Also, why is it that Spielgod worshippers continue to bring up other teams when confronted about their Spielgod? Who cares about the other teams. Focus on us. The Vikings. What has he done here... or rather, what hasn't he done here.... but I get it.... they will deflect and turn the topic to other GMs to not talk about Spielgods shortcomings.

I'm only stuck because of your refusal to answer.  You gave me three names, that would still put Rick at the 12th best GM in football.  And that's if I ignore your "give them three years" argument on Gettleman (or the fact that all of New York would laugh themselves to death at the suggestion), the horrible dumpster fire the Broncos have been the last few years (and the litany of examples I could make for botched Elway moves: See: Flacco, Joe or the offer made to Brock Osweiler) and Jerry Jones shouldn't even be a conversation.  For all your talk about longevity and productivity in that time frame, to cite Jerry Jones really undercuts your arguments.

The fact that you don't know anything about the rest of the league is a huge blow to your ability to analyze and conclude this with fairness.  It essentially means you are in a self-created bubble of analysis with no context.  Since you seem to be ok with that, it's sorta hard to take your arguments at face value.  You are basically the polar opposite of what you gripe about: You are the Spiel-hater.  Not a person with a valid argument, just a person with unfounded gripes.  That's fine, but....it makes what you hvae to say significantly less compelling or interesting.

And yes, plenty of enjoyment when we win. Would be a helluva lot more enjoyable if we won a championship though.

Luckily my favorite NBA team (Lakers) have done so, so I got to taste that level or enjoyment....and for me, that level of enjoyment is on a whole new level or enjoyment.



Levi..... why do you keep hiding behind league wide "context"? Focus on our team only.... our GM only..... we know this team inside and out. Every move....

Actually, for fantasy football purposes and just my general interest in the league (and Madden) I am pretty clued in to what other GMs are doing.  Watching games isn't going to give you a list of GM mistakes, paying attention to franchises and how they change over time and the contracts they hand out are a far better indicator.

I don't think one needs any kind of omniscience to do that, just be clued in beyond the Vikings.  

Yes, I agree.  It would also be a "helluva lot" worse (for a lot of us) if we were one of those sucky teams always over-reaching for their next savior in the top ten picks in the draft.

We've gotten close about once every ten years (1976, 1987, 1998, 2009, 2017).  Those were with many different GMs and Coaches.  We had a HOF HC and a HOF GM that fell one win short four times (Finks actually resigned in 1974).  With 32 teams, the math would suggest that if totally random a team would make at least the championship game once every eight years.  That's about what we've been doing, so I don't see much of an indictment for the current regime (or any of the others).  It's just really hard to bring home a Lombardi, even if you get lucky and land a HOF franchise QB.  In the meantime, I would rather be winning 10+ games a year than 3 - 6 wins and a top draft pick. 

Yes, yes, I know that there is still plenty of time for Ferrell to improve and not be a bust. However, the difference here is that Ferrell was already considered by most everyone following the draft to be a major reach, and he's not playing like a 1st round pick now. It appears that he's going to be a bust... in the same way that you believe Vikings are currently going to lose in the playoffs. It hasn't happened yet, but signs are pointing to it.

Also, I just get sick of adding qualifiers to my posts saying things like "well, of course there's time for player XYZ to turn things around". And I think a GM deserves a lot more time to develop their roster as compared to a pass rusher.



So wait, once they make a deep run a single time, it doesn't matter how well they do in the future? Elway and Gettleman are doing rather poor jobs right now, but I guess they can just coast on their pass successes!

I think there's an obvious differences between guys like Elway/Gettleman to a guy like Mickey Loomis. Loomis hasn't gotten the Saints back to the Super Bowl since 2009, but he's recently been nailing the draft and the team has been getting really close. This Saints team is competitive... yet he's on the same level of Elway & Gettleman just because they've also made the Super Bowl once?
