This year, Zimmers D has taken what seems to be, a huge step backwards. I dont have the exact stats, I'm sure theres a lot of stats out there that can be used either way, but its showing up on the scoreboard, and thats all that matters. The bend but dont break is SO close to breaking. I dont know if Zimmer sees this.
I believe he is using Barr wrong. Barr is even worse in coverage than he used to be. In the last games, the Iowa former TE's have made Barr their b!tch. I would rather see Kendricks covering ANYONE over Barr. I know I havent been a big Barr fan, but in his early years he could cover. Now he is a liability, in tackling, coverage, and being in position to make a clean tackle. When he does blitz, he runs RIGHT into a guy 95% of the time, the other 5% of the time hes just too slow or has the wrong angles. Have you watched Smith blitz? He runs around or speeds past the defender, Barr runs right into them, and hes damn near as fast as Smith.
Rhodes is sadly PATHETIC this year. I can believe a relatively young CB can deteriorate so fast in a few years. Again, I think he is told to play a certain way now, and its not working. Any close plays, and Rhodes fails. He no long can shut down the good WR's.
The rest of the CBs are almost as bad as Rhodes. Another reason i think its the scheme as much as anything else. Other teams have figured Zimmer out, and Zimmer refuses to change his ways. Way WAY too conservative. I believe in all 3 losses this has been the biggest contributor. He must have no faith in his own CBs, because they all play so far off on most of the plays, like 10 yards. None of them can cover a TE. Its come to the point we need safeties to play the TEs one on one coverage.
Yeah, I know we only have 3 losses. But this is crunch time, and this year even with only 3 losses, we will be lucky to get the 6th seed. Zimmer has to lossen his grip on these guys a little, take chances, go after the INT. Sendejo must have forgotten what team he was playing for, going after the ball like he did Sunday. It was refreshing to see.
I'm sure others can point out the problems a lot better then me. As I've said only 3 losses isnt a big deal. But the lapses in judgment, poor coverage, and poor tackles, are adding up, and if it continues, I have no doubt we will be on the losing end. Even the front 4 have taken their foot off the gas, and the opposing Olines have owned them, in protecting AND run blocking. I am seriously worried about every single one of of next oppenents, but mainly the Seahawks right now. Esp. with our road record the past few years against tough teams.
