The longer the season goes on and the issues continue, now with multiple players, I think there's a schematic issue. Rhodes has been beaten, Waynes has been beaten and yesterday Hughes got beaten multiple times.
Even saying those guys aren't playing well the scheme should be adjusted to cover for those deficiencies. It seems like our CB's are being asked to cover more deep in the secondary so Smith can play up more. Up front it doesn't seem like we're blitzing as much so these guys are getting beat in coverage.
We need more press coverage, more aggressive blitzing and Smith needs to stay out of the box more. Seems like that was more of the style we played in 2017.
However... When the Vikings played two deep safeties to help out the Corners against Seattle, they gave up over 200 yards rushing. So when Seattle went with an extra lineman, what did we do? Maybe we needed to put 8 in the box more.
The other team often has good players, and sometimes their call and their players beat our scheme and our players. The Vikings do give up passing yards, but the defense has not given up many points. It all comes down to what happens in the next two weeks and in the playoffs.
The players also look like a problem. Xavier Rhodes is not the same as in 2017. That probably means less help for Waynes, so he is more exposed. Remember how much Alexander struggled in 2017? He improved in 2018, and he seems good this year. So just because Hughes or Hill get beat now does not mean they won't improve. I think people whine way too much about Viking draft picks. Overall, the Vikings' roster is strong, and even the Cousins acquisition looks good.
