Since his rookie season, when he backed up Shiancoe, pers 16 games, he averages 60 receptions, 600 yards, and 5 TDs or thereabouts. Considering the well documented limitations of the Vikings passing game throughout his career...more accurately, the guys usually THROWING the ball... that's pretty productive.
But sure, he sucks. Only catches seven yard passes when you need nine. Rewatch the Green Bay at US Bank last year. 5 first half catches for first downs, extending drives and putting the team in position to score. Rewatch the Detroit game at Ford Field when he essentially WAS the Vikings passing game. Rewatch LAST WEEK when, despite having just three catches, one of them was a third down conversion on what should have been the game winning drive.
And who else is going to provide even the semblance of a threat from TE? Not Irv Smith, yet. Not David Morgan. Tyler Conklin? Please. The Vikings needed a TE who could serve as that third/fourth option in the passing game and Rudolph has and is that guy.
Come back with a legit criticism of Kyle Rudolph and I will readily admit EXTENDING him may have been a mistake-but they need him this year, and the extension gave them much needed cap relief too. So, no, it still wasn't a mistake.
I agree that he used to be very solid. I'm concerned about his recent extension though. he's much older and had a terrible last season. Now he has started slow and it led me to think, "Wow, we're giving this guy Travis Kelce money?"
