Yep that's true, but tie-breakers were wrote with 2 things in mind, season ending standings, and ties. If it weren't for ties, they would go by wins/losses. The bottom line is, tie-breakers aren't meant to break ties before the season ends, so they're inadequate to break ties before the season ends. If teams play a full schedule, there won't be an unequal number of games played at any tie-breaker level, so this would never be an issue.

I struggled with which method to use when doing this, but I can't ignore how 4-0 is logically better than 1-0, which is a scenario I've run into before. 0-5 is also worse than 0-1, but the NFL says they're the same. It would be interesting how the league would actually treat such a scenario if a season were to suddenly end prematurely, like because of a strike or something.

This problem never cropped up in 1982 or 1987, 2 seasons that were shortened because of a strike. Some teams played a different number of conference games, especially in '82, but there were never any 5-0 vs 3-0 scenario. Everyone had at least 1 loss so whether you went by record or win percentage, it would have been the same. Like in '87 the Bears 9-2 got the 2 seed over Washington at 9-3. A conference game for the Bears had been canceled.

By the end of week 5, the Cowboys and 49ers could both be 5-0, but the Cowboys would be 4-0 in conference and the 49ers just 1-0.

Well, the way you do it, and I understand it, penalizes a team for their schedule, which they have no control over. 4-0 is better than 1-0 in conference games, but the teams has not choice in when they play those games.

That's a good point, but you'd be punishing someone for their schedule either way lol. It's not the Patriots fault they were given 2 conference games and won them both. I was initially going by win percentage when I first started doing this because that is the rule, but it annoys me way too much when I run into the 4-0 vs 1-0 scenarios.

Is a batter who goes 4/4 better than one who goes 1/1? Well the 4/4 guy has already put in the work of going 4/4 and for the 1/1 guy to match him, he still has to go 3 for his next 3, which isn't very likely, and even if he does, all he can do is tie the 4/4 guy.

It's really a failure of math lol. To not account for frequency, which is why I started factoring in number of games played for undefeated and winless teams. If the NFL made that small tweak, problem solved. Because if you want another odd example, an 0-3 team (.000) has the same win percentage as an 0-0 team. Shouldn't an 0-0 team be treated like a .500 team xD?

Speaking of .500 teams, there's a problem there too. Is 3-3 better than 2-2? The frequency argument doesn't work as well in that scenario because what would you be asking? A 2-2 team has to go 1-1 to tie a 3-3 team, but is that good or bad lol? If a 2-0 team goes 1-0 to tie a 3-0 team, that's objectively good. Or an 0-2 team goes to 0-3 is objectively bad. 2-2 to 3-3 is neither. So in that case I do treat all .500 teams as equal no matter how many games they've played. And 0-0 can be an interesting argument. A case could be made either way if that's better or worse than 1-1. You can't divide by 0, but I treat 0-0 as .000 because they have 0 wins.

Yep I screwed up Baltimore and Houston, but I'm keeping NE ahead of Buffalo lol. A 2-0 division record is better than 1-0 in my book. I'm not playing the NFL's win pct game as I've pointed out earlier. A team that's 142-0 is better than one that's 1-0, but it wouldn't be in their world.

But the Vikings are in last place at 2-2 while 2 teams in the AFC are in 1st place at 2-2 haha. Bad year to be mediocre in the NFC. 8-8 or 9-7 might get you a wildcard in the AFC, while it's going to take 10 wins to make the playoffs in the NFC ... if this pace of the NFC dominating interleague play continues.

Watching teams play, the only team I see going 12-4 right now in the NFC is the Bears. And that is on their defense. San Fran will come to earth. Green Bay is winning but Rodgers is barely better than Cousins right now. Their luck can't hold out. Detroit, well who the hell knows what they will do. They can go 8-1-1 and end up 8-7-1.

Rams have a defensive problem that if they can't stop the other team from scoring they are going to be 8-8. Goff can't keep the pace up and bail them out every game. In their last 23 games including the playoffs they average giving up 23.7 ppg. That is not conducive to keep winning. Same with the Chiefs.
