It wasn't just Zimmer:

Cronin: Spoke w/ a handful of sources over the last few weeks regarding Sloter and heard the same thing: coaching staff feels one way, personnel dept/evaluators felt another.

Remember that Zimmer neglects the offense? What makes you guys think HE, alone, made this decision? Can't have it both ways...

Anyway, I think the most disturbing part for ME is this: Why wasn't the coaching staff confident enough in themselves to think they could develop him? He's a baller, has the it factor, is aggressive, rallies the team, etc. He seems like a passionate guy and a hard worker, as well. He genuinely WANTS to improve. He has a lot of things going for him. Okay, so he needed some help with calls at the line? That's the dealbreaker? The coaches didn't think they could help teach him and improve his overall skills? Yeah, that's concerning to me.

You haven't been lissssssssteniiiiiiiiiiiiing! Its personalities, not practice or play. Mannion is a good soldier because he knows he sucks and is lucky to be in the league at all; Sloter is a malcontent because he thinks he's got what it takes to play in the league. This clearly puts Zimmer's phony congratulations to him Thursday in the light that I saw it in at the time. It was "congratulations buddy, don't let the door hit ya on the way out!"

I'm upset about Sloter, too. I am. I think it sucks. I'm very confused by it. But I'm also not going to root for an emotional decision that might get us the next Leslie Frazier, especially not over a choice made about a backup position. Let's chill for a minute.

Do you not understand how waivers work? Everybody from #1 Arizona to #32 New England can submit a claim if they want a guy...lowest number gets him. If you want to be sure you get a guy, you have to trade for him. The Vikings wanted Fields, they trade for him. Nobody really felt the need to have Kyle Sloter...shocking I know.

So, Sloter, if he gets claimed at all, is going end up with the worst team that wants him. I suppose there is a chance he ends up clearing waivers, and in that case, he is still Practice Squad eligible, as he has not been on the active list for nine games in his career.

He hasn't been active for even nine games. He hasn't thrown a pass. He hasn't taken a snap. He looked considerably less outstanding Thursday than he had before. NO ONE looked at the QBs on their roster and said, "We gotta get Kelly Slaughter!"

Unfortunately, 'Boss is right about this.

I doubt he gets claimed. Heck, I HOPE he doesn't. Because A) That gives us a chance to get him back and/or B) He has more control/would likely get more looks. Essentially, it'd be a win for Sloter.

Zimmer is 3-4-1 against Rodgers, 5-4-1 against GB as a whole. I guess the latter could be construed as rather decent if you ignore the whole Rodgers being out thing, but 'not giving a chance'? Not even close.

At any rate. Were all Vikings fans, and Zimmer hasn't done any better of a job 'giving us a chance' then Chilly did.

I just can't figure out why they tried so hard to keep him in the first place, if they were going to outright release him. Didn't we roster 4 QBs at one point just to keep him safe?! Makes no sense!

How does he give us a chance? Even Mike Tice could win 9 games a season, with one of the worst owners the Vikings have had.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but nobody traded for Sloter before the cutting window closed. Nobody. The Vikings traded for some UDFA CB named Mark Fields some other no-name players got traded today, but not Sloter.

I fully expect Sloter to get claimed on waivers, but it's clear that it's not just the Vikings who don't like him... I still see him as a backup QB in the NFL at some point. But it was clear the Vikings were done with him and didn't need to carry 3 QBs on the roster. I don't understand why they poured the time and money into him to barely give him a crack at the #2 job, but whatever. This isn't worth panicking over, but it does irritate me.

Haven’t posted for a while but gotta get my 2 cents in, Sloter shouldn’t have been cut. Always gets me the beat writers covering the Vikes come out with the criticism after he’s cut. Yeah, I read a few comments in the past about Sloter not doing this, etc but you can’t deny his drive, talent and getting the team to rally around him. So the personnel evaluators and the coaches were at odds on Sloter. My guess is the personnel staff were high on him. We keep some CB that may never see the field or worse yet, couldn’t cover a blanket but cut Sloter.

I like Zim but you can see his ego and stubbornness get in the way of making good decisions.

Look, the kid made plays when he had a chance but he probably “didn’t work within the system”. If that’s the case, I suspect, Zim would of cut Fran the Man too.
